Report
This assignment is intended to help you settle on a good direction for your project. Once you’ve identified a topic of interest, you should begin your research to ensure that there is ample scholarly material out there to support your paper. By working hard with these tasks, you better ensure that your project doesn’t run into a dead end. Furthermore, you may find good material that could aid you throughout the semester-long project. State the central problem you are pursuing for your paper directly below (be specific – avoid using just a one or two words to describe!) I want to address the problem of researchers putting together a study that is misinformation and how it doesn’t get vividly fact checked because they still get published. Where are the morals and integrity of these researchers and publishers? Step 1: Find two scholarly articles that are directly on your topic, using VCU Libraries Search Tools (not Google). Go to https://www.library.vcu.edu to get started. Fill out the information below. For this task, both articles should discuss potential solutions to the central problem you described above. Article 1 Full APA-format reference: Broccardo, C. J., Aubert Bonn, N., Bandura-Morgan, L., Beall, J., Bens, C., Bradford, M., Branfield, L., Buchberg, A. M., Fang, F., Keith, A., Houser, B., Nyborg, J. K., Perry, K., Pierson, C. A., Pimple, K. D., Sakabe, K., Wainstock, D., & Welschot, T. (2018). RePAIR consensus guidelines: Responsibilities of Publishers, Agencies, Institutions, and Researchers in protecting the integrity of the research record. Research Integrity and Peer Review, 3(1), 15–15. https://doi.org/10.1186/s41073-018-0055-1 Brief summary of the article’s focus: This article focuses on how researchers, agencies, publishers etc., all have roles and the responsibilities in maintaining the integrity of research record. However, due to barriers affecting communication between stakeholders this leads to delays in correcting the literature and lack of transparency. Discuss a solution to the central problem proposed in the article: One of the solutions given specifically to overcome barriers to communication was, to establish and post clear policies on how to handle allegations of research misconduct. This can serve to set reasonable expectations, mostly regarding confidentiality. How does the article attempt to justify that solution? They justify it by saying how privacy policy vary greatly depending on which institution or agency you’re talking about, and these policies make it difficult to share protected information during and even after an investigation no matter what the conclusion was. So, policies should be commonly agreed upon between institutions and journals to simplify legal permissions and to this will promote compatibility and legitimacy of policies.
Article 2 Full APA-format reference: Evans, T. R., Pownall, M., Collins, E., Henderson, E. L., Pickering, J. S., O’Mahony, A., Zaneva, M., Jaquiery, M., & Dumbalska, T. (2022). A network of change: united action on research integrity. BMC Research Notes, 15(1), 141–141. https://doi.org/10.1186/s13104-022-06026-y Brief summary of the article’s focus: This articles focus is on the responsibilities of stakeholders in addressing the systemic issues that contribute to the concern of research transparency. Another focus is on setting standards of research integrity and engender scientific progress and innovation. Discuss a solution to the central problem proposed in the article: One of the solutions given to was to address research quality and the concern of publication bias. Going away from the traditional route of peer review for paper publication, this is called registered reports. It has two stages to it and the idea is to reduce publication bias because acceptance is based on the importance of the research question and methodological rigor, rather than the results. How does the article attempt to justify that solution? They justify this solution by breaking it into two stages. Stage 1 is where the introduction, hypotheses/research questions, methods, and analyses undergo peer review before data collection. What this does is the feedback can then identify flaws in the protocol and then which will allow for substantive changes to be made before using resources. In stage 2 of the RR publication pathway is where you write a report but before that report is published it goes through the peer review process of registered reports. They look at the report based on importance of the research question and the methodological rigor than just the results. This reduces pressure to come up with significant results and counters the incentives that drive selective reporting and other suspect research practices.
