MIST WK 12 Video Case 1. What are cyberespionage groups stealing from the United States? Cyber Espionage is to without detection gain access to computer systems that contain valuable commercial and/or military information to remain in place for continuous data gathering and remove data from the target system. This is the chinese threat which is the most significant economic security concern facing american business. These people are looking to steal the secrets of American businesses, intellectual property, blueprints for existing and emerging technologies, research and development advances, and merger and acquisition activities. All of these are being sought and even taken in order for the Chinese to gain and maintain economic superiority. This is making it hard for the United States to compete with other countries as their information is being stolen and taken and used to the United States disadvantage. It gives countries like China the ability to compete directly in Cars, consumer products, durable goods and nondurable goods which are stolen from the U.S. and by losing this research and technology the U.S. is losing its edge to future prosperity for the United States. 2. What does the video claim is the evidence these attacks are coming from China? Is this believable? In the video there are claims from the company Nortec that they have found many IP addresses which they can see coming out of Asia. By also analyzing the CEO of the company's internet activity you can see the traffic and see that in some cases random activity was able to be traced back to China. This information to me is very believable as China has been stealing information from many large and successful companies so they are able to maintain the lead in the economic and technological world. In the video it was believed that the bankruptcy of Nortec was caused by China spying on the company and stealing their information to make their own company with the same exact concept just so they could see the economic benefits of these ideas for themselves. 3. What does Adam Siegel in the video claim is the motivation of the Chinese government for conducting cyberespionage against the United States? Adam Siegel claims in the video that the motivation for the Chinese government to conduct cyberespionage against the U.S. is to become economically more powerful. China and the U.S. compete with each other for the largest economies and China is always looking for a way to put them on top and get the competitive edge over the U.S. They believe that they are going to fall behind the U.S. especially in the technology world which would ultimately hurt their economy extremely badly. By conducting cyberespionage they are able to access new technological ideas that they would have never thought of before which will help
them in not falling behind and might also cause them to advance even faster then they would have. Due to their extreme fear of falling behind in the technology world China goes straight to cyberespionage because they are able to advance their economy quicker and in ways that they wouldn't be able to do without the U.S. ideas. 4. Why didn’t Nortel management take the Chinese threat seriously? Why do various contributors in the video claim that American management does not take the problem seriously? Nortel management never really saw how important the result of the cyber attack had been. They never took urgent measures in trying to fix this ongoing problem that many believed eventually ran their business into bankruptcy. They never really thought much into the cyber attack and thought by just simply changing the log-ins for everything. They never did think once about the amount of information that could have been taken and the possible significance of the information to this company. The company was unable to detect these attacks on their company in the right amount of time which caused many to believe that the Chinese were successful in stealing much of the company's private information. This is ultimately what led the company into the ground and it was very coincidental that a company in China with the same business idea as Nortel was up and running and also successful. 5. The video claims the attacks on American corporate and military computer systems are increasingly sophisticated. Do you believe this is true? I believe that this is true as it has seemingly been hard to detect the attacks on our countries corporate and military computers. Because technology has transformed and become more advanced so have the hacking techniques. It is getting harder to hack and steal information due to technology and how advanced it is so the Chinese have to come up with more sophisticated ways to hack. They have to be able to steal and hack information without it notifying the U.S. companies so they are able to get the information they need. Many companies have been having trouble detecting these attacks. Because companies are unable to detect the attacks quickly, the Chinese government is able to get exactly the information they need to ensure they have a good economy and are able to keep up with advancements and technology in the United States and other competing countries. 6. Industrial espionage is a kind of technology transfer. The video claims the very DNA of Google is being drained by China, and that the United States will lose its competitive advantages with respect to China. Do you agree or disagree? Why? How else is technology transferred? Is it possible to stop technology transfer of any kind? I would have to agree that the U.S. could lose their competitive advantage to China. I think that China has been able to get away with many cyber attacks
recently and if these threats are unable to be addressed then the U.S. is going to have a problem. China is stealing the research and technological advances from the United States, they are stealing our hardwear blueprints and intellectual hardwear which is allowing the Chinese companies to advance in a quicker manner. If the United States is not able to stop these problems from happening it could be detrimental and would put China at even higher advantage and rapid growth then their economy is at now. I think that it might not be possible to stop technology transfer but we can make it much harder. By adding in high cyber security and forming technologies that can detect these attacks quicker and more efficiently we could try and stop these attacks from happening. When upping security and making it more difficult for information to be stolen it takes the target off of our backs and means that they might not try and pick on American companies as much because they know it will take time and money that they need in order to remain a good economy.
