WK 1- Video Case
1. Why does Facebook’s data center specialist argue that “The Internet is not a cloud?”
Facebooks’ data center specialists argue that “The internet is not a cloud”
because many people believe their information is in a cloud and just floating
around but in reality it is not. It is a real physical thing that it is stored in a building
that is interconnected through miles and miles of cable and fiber. These buildings
are all interconnected and can talk to each other and share data with each other
back and forth. These buildings are all supplied with enough power to where they
should never crash but just in case they do run into a power failure they have
massive diesel run generators that can be used as a backup.
2. What are some of the techniques Facebook uses to cool its data centers?
One of the techniques that Facebook uses to cool down its data center is by
using a massive 7 room rooftop that is a natural air conditioning system. It takes
the cool air from outside and sucks it in and then is mixed with warm air to
regulate the temperature. There is then a mist that sprays out to control the
humidity and the chilled air sinks to the back of each server stopping them from
overheating. Then all of the excess warm air is pushed out in massive fans. For
reference on how big these fans are they are 100 times the size of the fans that
are in a laptop.
3. Describe the five methods recommended by Google for reducing power consumption.
The first method recommended by google is Measure PUW (power usage
effectiveness). PUE is the ratio of total facility energy/IT equipment energy within
the data center. It measures how effectively power and cooling is delivered to the
IT equipment. In the best case scenario you want the PUE to get to as close to
1.0 as possible. You should measure PUE as often as possible and even every
second if possible. To make this easier Google incorporates PUE into their
building management system. The second method is Manage Airflow where they
want to eliminate the mixing of the hot and the cold air. One useful way to find
this is CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis which shows you where
your hot spots are and your air flow is directed in your data center. You can use
thermal modeling to find the hot spots which helps them find solutions in how to
create more air flow. The next method is Adjust thermostat Google found that by
raising their thermostat from 72 degrees to 80 degrees saved them thousands of
dollars in energy costs each year. The fourth method is Utilize Free Cooling
which is when you use the cooling from outside of your data center to provide
cooling without operating equipment like chillers. Some sites use evaporative
cooling in an efficient fashion which saves water. The fifth method is to optimize
power distribution by minimizing the conversion stages in the data center. You
can save energy and money.
4. Based on the Google video, how much of the world’s global greenhouse gasses are
the result of computing?
According to the video 2 percent of the world's global greenhouse gasses are the
result of computing. Of this 2 percent of greenhouse gasses the data center is
responsible for about 15 percent. There are many different ways to make energy
more efficient and help bring down this statistic. In the video it goes on to explain
all of Google's practices that they use to be a more efficient company and
become better for the environment. There are five methods that they give to
reduce the power consumption and become more efficient. They are making
these suggestions to companies and people to try and help to spread the word of
bringing down greenhouse gasses and making this world a cleaner and more
energy efficient place.
5. What are some of the benefits of using Dell’s Triton water cooling technology?
One benefit of Dell’s Triton water cooling technology is higher computer
performance. This means that computers can run better and more efficiently
while also keeping up with the bigger workloads that come along with it. This
makes for quicker and better performance and these computers can take on a lot
more tasks and information because they are made to accommodate the larger
workloads that people need. The cpu is able to be pushed to another level of
performance, it translates the additional power and cooling headroom and to
higher frequency on the cpu which yields the higher performance which helps put
through workloads for every customer.
