1 Field Notes- Module 2 SPE560- Spring Session B Tikaya McCoy Arizona State University
2 In order to promote good behavior and discourage inappropriate behavior, Module 2 covered extinction processes, positive and negative punishment, and the application of various differential reinforcement procedures. The focus on time-outs as a form of discipline was one of the topics that stood out in the debate on punishment protocols. There were two distinct kinds of time-outs discussed: non-exclusion and exclusion. Since non-exclusion is the less restrictive of the two, it should be used first, according to ethical rule 4.09 (Least Restrictive Procedures) and as stated in Dr. Yuan's presentation. It entailed letting the client view the activity but removing them from the "time-in" activity. Exclusion time-outs, on the other hand, entail physically removing the client from the activity, denying them access to participate in or observe the activity, and sometimes even establishing a special time-out chamber. It was also emphasized that, if it was not possible to physically remove the individual, the activity should, if possible, be transferred (G-16). Use both positive and negative forms of discipline, such as time outs, fines, and overcorrections.
2 The use of extinction to reduce undesired behaviors was the subject of the other noteworthy portion of the conversation. Extinction has proven to be a useful strategy in my professional experience, but naturally, teaching a replacement habit is also necessary. It's also critical to be ready for additional consequences that these operations may have on patients, such as increased severity of pre-existing behaviors (such as extinction bursts), hostility, and other new or maladaptive behaviors. Consider potential negative outcomes when employing reinforcement, extinction, and punishment techniques on (H-5). As indicated in the presentations, in order to reduce these undesirable consequences, it might be essential to use a combination of approaches.
