BIA4100: Location Analytics Exercise 10: Location Analytics Network Exercise Exercise Version: SP2020 Exercise Author: Erskine Credits: Interview questions were adapted from LiveCareer’s Top 100 Interview Questions. Available at: https://www.livecareer.com/resources/interviews/questions/informational- interview-questions Objective: Develop and expand the course’s network of professionals. Introduction In this exercise you will help MTSU foster a network of location analytics professionals. You will have two options for this exercise. You can either conduct an interview and submitted a video recording, or you can conduct an interview and submit the text transcript. Required and Recommended Tools Email, LinkedIn, Personal Contacts Task 1: Identify a location analytics professional Use LinkedIn or your personal contacts to locate a business geospatial professional. Note, the person you identify should be employed for a commercial enterprise, not a University, Government Agency, etc. Please remember that for the best results you should be friendly and personable, not pushy and unprofessional. Task 2: Schedule an interview/conversation Perform an interview with the individual. Here is a list of questions to get you started. There is no need to ask all of these questions. The conversation should flow naturally. What is your background, how did you end up working with geospatial data? What do you like best about working with geospatial data? What are emerging trends and changes in the location analytics field? What do you find unique about your career field? In what ways is the location analytics field changing? What tools and skills should one know to be successful working in location analytics? How does the economy affect the industry?
What is the employment outlook like in your career field? How quickly is this field growing? What are some areas of growth in this field? Can you estimate future job openings? What parts of this industry offer the best opportunities in this particular field? What are the opportunities in this career like in Middle Tennessee? From everything you’ve observed, what problems can you cite regarding working in this career? When people leave this career, what are the usual reasons? What are the most significant characteristics of this industry? If I am unable to obtain a position in this field, what other fields would you recommend I consider? Do you have any advice for someone interested in this field/job? How do you connect with others that work in location analytics? Would you be willing to be a guest speaker at MTSU? If you cannot make it in person, we could arrange a Skype presentation. Does your organization have any anonymized data or sample problems we could use in our course? At the end of the interview, be sure to ask if it is ok for you to post your write-up online for others to see? If not, it’s ok. Just be sure to capture this important information. Whenever a student meets with an industry expert, they should always ask for general career advice. I encourage you to ask these questions! Responses to these questions do not need to be included in your report. Can you suggest some ways a person could obtain the experience necessary to enter the location analytics field? What is the best way to obtain a position that will get me started in your occupation? What do you wish you’d known before you entered this field? Which professional journals and publications should I be reading to learn about this career? What kinds of experience, paid or unpaid, would you encourage for anybody pursuing a career in this field? Which professional organizations associated with this career should I join? What other kinds of organizations hire people to perform the functions you do here? What special advice do you have for a student seeking to qualify for this position? Do you have any special world of warning or encouragement as a result of your experience? If you are really interested in working at the organization, you may want to ask the following: Do you know of other people whom I might talk to who have similar jobs?
Do you have any written job descriptions of positions in this field/company? If I wanted to obtain a job here, who would the best person to contact? If I wanted to apply for a job at your company, what would be the best way to learn about job opportunities? If you were conducting a job search today, how would you go about it? Would you be willing to answer more questions, by phone or in person, if I need additional advice in the future? Step 3 | Option A: Write up your findings.
