Presenting Data with Figures
Examining Figures in Prior Research
Refer back to one of your five original research articles that includes a figure or graph.
Which
article are you referring to (include article title and link)? If none of your five original research
articles have a figure, please let the instructor know and we will find one for you to use!
-What type of figure/graph(s) is/are used in the article?
It is a flow chart and multiple tables.
-What is the graph showing? Describe the main point you get from the figure.
Participant characteristics presented as mean ± standard deviation
-Check out how the graph/figure is labeled.
Is the graph clearly labeled with a figure caption
and other labels?
It has a detailed title with a description below.
-Does the figure contain enough information to “stand alone?” Describe why or why not.
It could stand alone if you know what the main idea of the article is, but if it was a random chart
on the internet, you would need more information. It would be hard for it to stand alone.
Thinking about your Research Project:
When planning a research study, researchers plan out presentations of the data and results in
advance.
Describe what figure you plan to use when you present your research study.
I plan on using some for of bar graph to describe protein consumption compared to body
weight.
-What type of figure/chart(s) will you use?
I will use tables and a pie or bar graph to show types of exercise for students.
-Describe your plan for what your figure will look like including labels, legend, and captions:
