Talk about privacy, confidentiality, and security. Explore the differences between privacy and confidentiality. Discuss how security is related to privacy and confidentiality. ANSWER: Privacy is a social value first introduced in the legal realm in 1890, and allows individuals to be selective about what is revealed to others (Brodnik, Rinehart-Thompson, & Reynolds, 2023, p. 7). It is defined by the Merriam- Webster Dictionary as the quality or state of being apart from company or observation, and/ or freedom from unauthorized intrusion. This means that an individual (patient) has the right to limit the disclosure of their personal health information, and the right to meaningfully control who will have access to said information. Most interestingly, the American Medical Association privacy principles are not limited to entities who fall under HIPAA regulations, but rather any individual who might use or access PHI (Brodnik, Rinehart-Thompson, & Reynolds, 2023, p. 8). Confidentiality deals with the legal concept of information being shared between two parties, such as physician and patient, the expectation that the information will be kept confidential, and that this information will be protected from inappropriate access and only be made available to authorized personnel as needed. With confidentiality, the healthcare provider/ organization is obligated to collect and store data in a way that ensures its continued protection. Confidentiality and privacy in health care is important for protecting patients and maintaining trust between doctors and patients. While HIPAA includes many provisions, confidentiality was one of the parts of healthcare that it most substantially improved (Standards of Care, 2018). Security is related to privacy and confidentiality in that it pertains to both physical and electronic protection of patient information. Security can be broken down into three parts when discussing healthcare: data security, information security, and system security (Brodnik, Rinehart- Thompson, & Reynolds, 2023, p. 9). The sum of these parts comprehensively protect sensitive information from unauthorized access, whether accidental or intentional. References: Brodnik, M. S., Rinehart-Thompson, L. A., & Reynolds, R.
