Structured, Semistructured, and Unstructured Data
In the world of data storage, management, and analysis, data comes in many different
forms. Each form of data possesses its own unique characteristics and challenges. There are three
main types of data, namely: structured, semistructured, and unstructured data. Each of these
types will be elaborated in the paragraphs below.
Structured data refers to data that is neatly organized and follows a specific pattern. For
example, consider a well-organized filing system, in which all the files look the same but are
arranged in some order (e.g., alphabetically by first/last names). In the context of relational
databases, each piece of data has a consistent format, making data management very easy. A
database management system keeps everything in check, making sure that the data follows all
rules and structures defined in a pre-planned layout (e.g., ERD) (Elmasri & Navathe, 2015).
Next, is semistructured data. In certain circumstances, data is gathered without a clear
plan for how to store and handle it. This data might have a specific structure, but not all of it will
follow the same structure. There may be some parts of the data the share the same properties
across different areas, but some parts might only apply to a few of them. Additionally, new
information can be added at any time, and there is no set plan for data organization. This is
semistructured data (Elmasri & Navathe, 2015).
Lastly, is unstructured data. This type of data is like information that is not actively
organized within a transactional system. For example, data that is not stored in a relational
database management system, such as media and entertainment data, surveillance data, audio,
weather data, data collected by IoT devices (e.g., sensors), etc (
