Report
September 18, 2023 Go2Linux, Inc. Jae Woo 7217 Greenfitch Way Hanover, MD 20176 Dear Senior Management Team, The purpose of this memo is to address all your questions and concerns in regard to the transition to the Linux operating system. The particular version of the Linux operating system I’ll be recommending to you is the Zorin OS. This OS in particular is a free software and is considered ideal for most companies that are used to having access to a Windows OS. The security for the Zorin comes with resistance to PC viruses and malware, as well as having the option of security patches for consistent updates. This OS does not collect personal data, which is a high form of security and necessary for a business like Faster Computing, INC. The migration process is as follows: 1. Each user must first backup their data in an alternate storage. 2. The user must then create a bootable USB install drive. 3. Once that is complete, the action of booting form the USB install drive must be completed. 4. Finally, install the new copy of the Zorin operating system. To take full advantage of the security system for this operating system, I’ll be setting up many security options for the ultimate data protection for Faster Computing, INC. I will start off by implementing a user authentication process by having the user receive an email of a special code when they log in every single time. This will reduce the amount of fraud and hackers from getting into the user’s systems. This is called a two-factor authentication. There will be many options for the user to receive special codes whether it is by email, or a text message sent to their phones, to prove that they are the correct user signing into the computer. As for passwords, the unique passwords created for login will have to be a variety of mixed letters, numbers, and symbols. This will create the best protected and unique password to reduce potential hacking incidents. I will allow the options of data-at-rest and data-in-transit for each user. The users could actually use both methods because they are two great ways to keep data stored safely. The use of an external hard drive for data-at-rest will be the best option, and for data-in-transit will have to be through the use of cloud. As far as the installation of applications go, I will only allow useful and necessary applications to be downloaded for each computer that is relevant to the work that they are trying to accomplish. Outside of that, the users will have to go through a chain of command to receive permission to download any other applications. This is the best way to maintain a professional and civil workplace that will also reduce any form of security data from leaking out into the public. The Linux operating system should allow most applications that were utilized in Windows to work the same in Linux. Linux is an operating system that is best used for businesses and
organizations that need a system with the highest level of security. Though, Linux is probably not the best for gaming, but I’m pretty sure there won’t be any time for gaming during work, nor will it be appropriate. Other than that, Linux will offer anything a Windows OS can plus more. Emailing and web browsing will be the same as Windows, and if there really is something that the user must install in a Linux then with permission, the user may be able run a Windows app through the use of WINE, a compatibility layer that allows Windows apps to work in a Linux OS. There are two alternatives to consider when web browsing. Our theme for this memo is security over everything! So naturally, when you think about browsing the internet through the use of google chrome, then you know that a lot of your data may be accessible. The first alternative for web browsing is the classic Mozilla Firefox. This browser already come pre- installed with Linux and is an excellent alternative to a Google option. Second, the Basilisk, is a Firefox fork that features everything a classic Firefox browser had to offer. With Basilisk, the user is able to utilize legacy add-ons and extensions. When it comes to the use of Microsoft office, Linux has alternatives that will work just as well. LibreOffice is a free application and a great alternative to MS Office. This application comes with Writer, for document editing, Impress for presentations, and Draw for vector-drawing. WPS Office is also a great alternative and is also a multi-award-winning open-source office solution. WPS stands for Writing, Presentation, and Spreadsheets and is considered to be the jack of all trades. A highly compatible and stable application across all versions of the Linux OS. Logging and monitoring the Linux systems can be done by storing log files in plain-text and can be found in the /var/log directory and subdirectory. The administrator can change, view, and access these files and can make changes through the use of the cd command. Process management is another essential component of the administrator to keep up and manage the robust and stable performance of the Linux OS. The process goes through many stages during its lifetime. The states of the process are as follows: 1. Created: when the program is executed. 2. Ready: when the state is waiting to be assigned to a processor. 3. Running: when the process is actively executing instructions. 4. Waiting: when the state is waiting for an event to happen. 5. Terminated: when the state has completed the execution or has been terminated. 6. Zombie: when the state has completed its execution, but the process has not yet read its exit status just yet. I have recommended the distro flavor of Zorin for the Linux operating system. I will be comparing this distro with another popular option in the Linux Mint flavor. Both of these flavors are free to use and are great options for beginners. They both have similar features and are great for previous Windows users. I decided to go with the Zorin OS because of the slightly better security feature that it comes with. As I have mentioned before, Zorin is resistant to PC viruses and malware, allows security patches for software updates to arrive more quickly, and most importantly, it doesn’t collect any personal data. Package managing is a necessary tool for Linux to reduce the complexity for users by automating updates and manage the software of the system. All package management tools are
accessible for Linux users and the best way for Zorin to automate updates is through the use of APT for better package managing in Ubuntu. I also mentioned earlier in this memo that the use of Windows applications is possible through the use of WINE. Installing this feature will allow many Windows applications to also be installed into Linux and uses freely. I believe that the best way to share files and printers through Linux is by the use of CUPS (Common Unix Printing System). CUPS is already a feature that’s been installed when after the first initial Linux OS installation. To access this, the user must open and navigate to localhost: 631, which will open a page that will provide access to the system’s printer settings. After some configurations and modifications, the user will be able to connect to a shared printer. In conclusion, I hope to have answered all your questions and concerns about the migration to the Linux operating system and going over the benefits of this OS. This system will be a major upgrade to your computers and will help increase your overall business with Faster Computing, INC. I am looking forward to working with you more in the coming future in development of this organization!
