6. Resources
Summary:
◈
Management information systems enable managers to assess the
company's performance in real time.
◈
Future trends can be predicted using data collected in digital databases.
◈
Cybercrimes jeopardize data security and customer protection.
◈
Data is becoming more usable as information technology advances.
◈
Customer purchasing patterns are easier to track and forecast using AI.
◈
A company can use big data to identify patterns within the organization.
Key Terms:
Management information systems (MIS)
are computerized analyses of an
organization's data that help to speed up and improve decision-making.
Data analytics (DA)
is the process of examining large amounts of collected
data in order to discover patterns in the information contained therein and
make business decisions.
Database
is an organized set of information about the overall business
Information technology infrastructure is a collection of information
technology (IT) components that form the basis of an IT service, including
computer, networking hardware and software.
Internet of things
are the machines and the infrastructure that allows them
to talk to one another and to the cloud.
Data centres
contain physical or virtual servers that store, transfer, and
access digital information for businesses.
Data
can be stored in remote data centres thanks to cloud computing.
The goal of an
Artificial Neural Network (ANN)
is to copy the brain's network
of neurons so that a computer can learn and make decisions in a way that is
similar to how a person would.
Machines that learn from experience, optimise for new inputs, and perform
tasks automatically are referred to as
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
.
Big data
refers to a company's ability to access and store large amounts of
business data for analytics.
1
Digital Taylorism
emphasises job efficiency by standardising and routinely
employing tools and techniques for completing each task.
Data mining
is the process of collection, cleansing, analysis, and
interpretation used to solve business problems.
Customer loyalty programmes
reward customers who buy products and
interact with the company's brand on a regular basis.
Activity 1: Explain | Who funded it and why: Cyber Grand
Challenge?
The Cyber Grand Challenge was funded by the US military research agency Darpa. It is to
protect your machine while finding vulnerabilities in competitors machines. Since they
believe the world's growing dependence on computer systems demands the creation of
smart, autonomous security systems.
Activity 2: pre-teach vocabulary (Frayer model)
Define
●
the study of how
people use
technology to
manage information
●
MIS is used to to
analyze financial
data, develop
forecasts, and create
financial reports.
Management
information
system
Characteristics
●
The financial
position of the
company can be
tracked in real time
by MIS
●
MIS assists in
better meeting
customer demands
●
MIS speed up and

Examples
●
obtaining useful
information
●
drawing sound
conclusion
●
assisting with
decision making
Non-examples
●
self centered when
decision making
●
not getting useful
information

Activity 3: What is the difference between cybercrime and
cybersecurity?
Cyber crime is defined as criminals who hack into online platforms with malicious intent,
typically to steal one's personal and/or private information. In contrast, cyber security
protects people and their information from cyber criminals.
Activity 4: To what extent cybercrime could affect a social platform
like TikTok [10p]
If tik tok were to get hacked many people's information could get leaked.
Even though people go by usernames it's not enough to protect their
passwords and or personal information from cyber criminals. If hackers
could get into specific accounts they could take advantage of influencers
profiles to benefit their cause by posting on their accounts. Tik tok is a
highly influential social media platform, if hackers got a hold of an app
like this it could be detrimental to impressionable users who could be
manipulated by the hackers if they chose to use the actual app for
whatever goal they are trying to achieve.
Activity 5: What is the impact of COVID-19 on IT infrastructure of
business?
COVID-19 forced businesses to improve and adapt their IT infrastructure
systems to be able to work remotely as people could not occupy offices.
When the pandemic hit, businesses were unprepared to transfer to
remote work, and were still reliant on pre-covid methods of business.
Their IT Departments were underdeveloped and too many employees
had technical issues that could not be handled. Additionally many
employees didn't know how to use digital services such as video
conferencing and document collaboration.
Activity 6: Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of implementing VR
shopping in a business. [10p]

Benefits of implementing VR shopping is that it allows the user to have
an engaging and immersive shopping experience where they’re able to
visualise the product from the comfort of their own home. Some
drawbacks is that the actual software is expensive, thus not being
attainable for everyone to then have the shopping experience.
Activity 7: Key Concepts in Surveillance Studies
Used in large corporations to observe workers and make sure
employees are not wasting company time
Taylorism: dividing specific tasks so the employees get work done more
effectively
By viewing efficiency levels companies can achieve optimal success rate
Surveillance is everywhere in the workplace now days
Fails to care about the dignity of employees negatively affecting
relationships between employees and employers
Puts success over care
Example is in hospitals determining the shortest possible time to spend
with a patient rather than the time needed with a patient.
Activity 8: Gaming: What is data mining, and is it reliable for
updates?
The process of reading files to try and find new updates. Kinda. The data
can be seen as a good source of information but just because data
miners find certain information doesn't mean it will be in the next update.
Activity 9: Customer loyalty programmes. Team: Manager
Advantages:
-
Customers have an incentive to be consistent patrons of the ice
cream business, thus bringing more consistent profit to the
business.
-
Create loyal customer relationships that benefit the business in the
long run.
Disadvantages:
-
Potential loss in profit as customers accumulate rewards for being
loyalty members.
-
Encourages those who are not members to shop somewhere else.

Activity 10: Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of implementing AI
in a business. [10p]
Some benefits of implementing AI in a business is that it can help reduce
operating costs as repetitive/redundant tasks can be reallocated from a
person to software, while that would mean the job loss of some
employees. The implementation of AI software puts the business at risk
of data breaches or error as it is still in development and can have holes
in their firewall.
