Each computer has a drive to store information. This collection of information is called a file and is saved
onto a drive, and you can organize and store files in folders. This makes it easier to locate the files you
are looking for faster. An operating system makes these viewable, allowing us to run apps and open files.
The operating system knows the location of all the files and folders on the drive. A large capacity drive
will allow you to store more items on your computer. There are multiple types of storage (drive): hard
disk drive (HDD), solid-state drive (SSD), and USB flash drive.
SSDs are much faster than HDDs and more
expensive. Backing up your drive on your computer to an external drive is very important because if, for
some reason, the drive stops working or gets damaged, you will lose all the data and information you
had saved on it. There are a few different methods to back up your files. The common and easiest way is
to set auto backups to cloud storage such as OneDrive or iCloud. These services have a monthly fee after
you reach a specific capacity.
You can select the time and how often you want a backup to perform. The
other option is to do a manual backup on an external drive. A prime scenario where having an external
hard drive backup would be necessary is when getting a new computer or laptop; you need to have your
files backed up so you can transfer them to your new computer if you are selling or disposing of your
previous one. My current backup plan is a combination of both cloud storage and external HDD. I use
iCloud for our photos on phones and computers and OneDrive for the programs and files on my
computer. I have them back up daily around 2 a.m. I also do a full computer backup on a 5 TB HDD, so if
something happens to my computer, I can easily back it up from the last time I did it.
My challenge with
making backups is being able to afford the fees with the cloud storage membership and remembering to
pull out my 5 TB HDD to back up my computer every month.
Computers have Random Access Memory (RAM), which is the hardware where data is stored
temporarily. When the computer is turned off, all the data on the RAM is lost. Computers also have
drives where data is stored when the computer is turned off. All the important items are stored on the
drive, like programs, pictures, movies, etc. Gathering data from memory is fast but has a small capacity
and is expensive. In contrast, a drive is slow to collect data from and has considerable capacity. A CPU
will copy the program and any required data from the drive into memory to run a program. Copying data
from the drive to the memory is slow. If you have a memory with a larger capacity, it will mean less time
copying, and programs will run faster.
My laptop has 16 GB of RAM installed and is currently at 9.1 GB,
58% while writing this discussion. If I had 32 GB of RAM, my programs would run even faster, and I could
run even more programs simultaneously. If I only had 8 GB of RAM, my computer would be struggling to
keep up with everything I am currently doing, and I would probably need to close out some programs to
help.
