Lesson Kit Week 5 Manage Project Risks “Take stock of the potential risks related to a current or past project. Select the actions you took as part of your risk analysis.” “If you didn’t take all of the actions above, how might you conduct a more careful risk audit next time?” I’m going to focus more on identifying how to mitigate internal risk. In our business being understaffed is a common problem. Most project teams are spread thin, and the workload sometimes becomes too much to handle. As a project manager, I’m going to ensure I provide detailed task lists and support to shareholders to ensure I’m correctly staffed for my next project. “Which risks does your organization face the most often?” “Think about a project you were part of that ran into trouble. How might a contingency plan have helped your team deal with the situation?”
A project I was a part of that ran into trouble was related to a new payroll system. This was an important transition to meet corporate standards. The project had a very quick deadline, and we were pushed hard to get everything converted from our old system to the new one. We had very little time to test and a parallel transition was not a possibility. If we would have had a contingency plan established prior to starting this project, we may have been able to mitigate the risk of missing the deadline. Missing the deadline affected people’s pay which to me is one of the most important things not to mess up in a business. “What action will you take next to anticipate and mitigate project risks?” For the next project, I’m a part of I’m going to focus on finding the biggest risk areas that could possibly affect tasks from being completed. I will work with the team to figure out potential contingency plans if these problems happen. I know it may take a little more time on the front end, but if the problem does arise, we will have an action plan to solve it already established.
