Discussion 4
1) Describe a strategic issue in your current workplace or one from a previous employer?
I worked at an Italian restaurant/pizzeria when I was a teenager many moons ago. As a new
server with no experience, my manager had me rely on servers who were at the company a long
time, to train me. All the new servers were being trained by those who were there longer and
more experienced and knowledgeable. Servers, waiters, or waitresses are responsible for taking
the guests food orders, relaying that information to the kitchen, when the orders are ready bring
them to the guests, and occasionally check in with the guests to make sure everything is ok or see
if they need anything.
I think one of the major issues my previous employer had was the day-to-day management of
labor (servers). Not only were the originals servers there but about six new hires were there as
well. Even though it is so important to have enough coverage throughout the day, the company
needs to be able to stay within their labor budget so they can afford their employee’s wages.
2) How was the issue identified and what steps if any were implemented to address the
issue?
The issue the restaurant started to have, in my opinion, was too many servers at the restaurant at
one time or not enough servers. I don’t think the manager considered the restaurant’s slower
business times versus its busier times. Without a system in place for creating the server’s
schedules, managers cannot adjust for these changes easily. Labor costs and staying within the
company’s budget is extremely important to the success of the restaurant.
During my time as a server, they did not have computers or computer software so I think it
would be hard to manage unless owners and/or management did like a month-long written study
that examined the busyness of the restaurant during various times of the day. If this issue
happened in today’s world, I think it can be corrected by implementing a software program
(because there is a software program for everything these days) that helps restaurant mangers
predict the number of servers the restaurant will need at any given time. What help they may
need to cover shifts during the dinner hours may not be what they need to have during the
morning or afternoon shifts and vice versa. With the software, it would allow management to
continuously plan their staff’s schedules using past data. Having the knowledge to know how
many servers the restaurant will need at a particular time of day will help them with labor costs
to stay within the company’s budget. This will also ensure there will be enough staff on hand to
cover the various shifts.
