Steps on how to configure a storage device:
1.
Once you have logged into the computer, right click on the start button at the
bottom left hand corner of your screen.
2.
Click on disk management.
3.
Once the disk management page has opened, you would have to decide if you
want to keep the disk as a basic disk or a dynamic disk.
4.
If you want a dynamic disk, you would right click on the desired disk that want to
convert and select the option to convert to dynamic. There will be a prompt that asks if
you would like to convert any of the other disks to dynamic as well. The system will
convert it automatically, once you have decided on which disk you want to change.
5.
After deciding to change or keep the hard drive as is, you would right click on the
unallocated space on the drive and click the partition (percentage of a hard drive) that you
want. The basic disk is only allowed to have a maximum of four partitions. There is an
exception to the four partition rule for a basic disk, which is the extended partition [can
have up to twenty-four logical partitions (a partition that resides in an extended
partition)]. The dynamic disk can have up to 128 partitions.
6.
Once the partitions are made, you would need to make a volume that can be saved
to one hard drive or multiple hard drive depending on the type of disk. The dynamic disk
can have a volume that spans multiple disk, while the basic disk cannot. Dynamic disk
can create simple volumes or spanned volumes. A simple volume is a volume that is
created by a partition or multiple partitions on a single drive that can be contiguous or
not. A spanned volume is a volume that contains some space from multiple disk that
allow data to be saved to.
7.
For each volume, you assign a drive letter such as C for the C drive for every
volume you create.
8.
Once the letter is assigned, you can start saving data to the volume that was
created.
Tools needed to create a storage file:
Component
Function
Hard Drive
The hard drive is a piece of equipment
that allows that computer to read, write
(edit), and save data.
Disk Management
The disk management allows people to
allocate space to the creation of storage
files in the system through the use of a
graphical user interface.
Command Prompt
The command prompt allows people to
create storage files in the system through
the use of commands with allocated
space.
Purpose of a file system:
A file is a way that allows people to organize and store data and information to a storage
device. The file system and the operating system work together to make sure that data is
available, accessible, and safe.
Chosen Operating System:
I choose the Windows operating system since it is the operating system that I am the most
used to. I have never used any other operating system outside of it. The operating system
tells me when there are updates that need the system to restart and I can set a time that
allows the system to update. I know how to work my way around the system to find
where a certain piece of data is located within the system.
Windows File Systems:
Property
FAT32
NTFS
Partition size
2 terabytes*
256 terabytes
Volume size
2 terabytes*
256 terabytes
File name length
Long file names (255
characters, spaces)
Unicode (255 characters,
anything but /)
File size
4 gigabytes
16 terabytes
Amount of files
268,435,437
4,294,967,295
*FAT32 partitions/ volumes can be used up to 2 terabytes in size. Windows can read
partitions up to the 2 terabyte size, but cannot create them.
Administrator’s Point of View:
From an administrator’s point of view, an operating system has the correct log in info for
a user would be needed in a storage device. Because without the correct log in, the user
won’t be able to gain access until the log in is allowed for them. That is why most
operating systems will ask for the user to create a log in when the user first turns on the
computer.
Ways Users can use a Storage System
The user can store data and information (music, videos, pictures, documents). The user
can also create documents and other data, as well as find a file that they can’t locate.
