Security Incident Case Study Tyler Sumsion
What could have been done to prevent this incident? A few things come to mind for preventing something like what was described in the case study from happening. First, having somebody at the entrance or exit to the door to prevent somebody from entering. If the door was manned, they could have directed the passenger to the proper area. If a person could not be spared to watch the area, a camera could be installed to alert security of entering. Additionally, there should be some sort of lock or badge-in system on doors that are not meant for the general public. Now that the incident has occurred and everyone’s safety is at risk, what is the best way to manage the airport? Like security protocol suggests, it is probably wise to close security gates to attempt to apprehend the man who went through the door. If alarms immediately went off, it is unlikely that the man could have made his way through boarding areas and boarded an airplane. The airplanes already on the runway could be diverted to other gates to then further screen those already onboard. Screening all terminal 4 passengers will need to be screened once more in order to ensure safety, but perhaps having security personnel in the terminal pulling aside all those who match the description would help ensure the person is found. Security cameras identified that the moving walkways are causing a pileup of people at the other end. Those walkways should be turned off until the volume of people has reduced. Lastly, clear communication will help reduce the chaos and uncertainty found among the passengers. The PA system could be used to help with crowd control and communication. How will you work with TSA and the Port Authority to accomplish your safety objectives? Ultimately having a clear plan in place before something like this happens will be the best way to prepare. Regular training and understanding of protocol will help to ensure processes
and procedures are being executed with efficiency. Making sure that all available personnel to assist with all core functions will help to make sure no steps get missed. How will you ensure the safety of passengers, airline and airport employees, as well as the community? Transparency and clear communication will be critical in making sure passenger, airline, employee, and community safety. Having a clearly defined order of operations in the event of a security breach will need to be trained for beforehand. Having an “all hands on deck” mentality among airport security will guarantee a successful deployment of the safety protocol.
