ENVS 1402L
Name:
_
NOTE: You must be present during your lab meeting to earn credit for lab. No attendance
= No lab assignment grade. Your active participation in lab is valued and necessary.
Pre-Lab Activity
1.
While reflecting on your day-to-day life as a student at GSU, what environmental and/or
sustainability challenges have you noticed in the city of Atlanta? (1+ complete sentences)
2.
What urban design changes would you suggest for transforming Atlanta into a sustainable urban
area? (1+ complete sentences)
I.
Designing Sustainable Cities
a.
Reflect on the environmental and sustainability issues we have seen in various cities over the past
two semesters regarding endangered species, pollution, resource utilization, aging/outdated
infrastructure, climate change and extreme weather events, social equity and justice, etc., as well
as the solutions that many cities implemented to resolve these issues. Using the knowledge that
you have acquired in lecture and lab thus far, design your own ideal sustainable city with your
group by including sustainable infrastructure, thoughtful placement of structures/features,
consideration of potential hazards, etc.
b.
Each group member will choose a role to play in a Town Hall meeting: Speaker (draws up the
city design draft for the group during the Town Hall Meeting and presents the final model), Road
Infrastructure Specialist, Health & Wellness Specialist, City & Real Estate Development
Specialist, Social Equity & Justice Specialist, Resource Conservation Specialist, Water &
Sanitation Specialist, Clean Air Specialist, Natural Disaster Protection & Remediation Specialist,
and Habitat & Wildlife Conservation Specialist.
Each group member is free to choose their
role, but there MUST be one Speaker per group.
c.
Once you have chosen your role, you must come up with an issue that your city is currently
facing in your department, as well as a solution (e.g. a Health and Wellness Specialist notices that
the city has poor eating habits and suggests implementing a community garden).
d.
As a group, you all must work together to create a design for a city that includes all your
suggested infrastructure/features. Be sure to consider placement of your features as well (e.g. you
may not want to put your garden next to your water treatment facility).
e.
Once you are done designing your city, take a picture of your draft and attach it to your lab. Then,
go over to the sandbox and build a model of your design. Piling sand into mounds will create
mountains, while digging trenches in the sand will create waterbodies. Extra building
materials/blocks are provided. When your group is done with your model, present your city to
your TA, then deconstruct your city and clean up the sandbox for the next group to use.
1.
What role did you play during the Townhall meeting?
2.
What are the issues or challenges that your group discussed in the Townhall meeting? Be sure
to include each group member’s issue, excluding the speaker.
3.
What suggestions did your group come up with? Be sure to include each group member’s
solution/suggestion, excluding the speaker.
4.
Describe your city and the placement/location of your infrastructure/features in relation to
one another and explain if there was any special consideration regarding placement. (3+
complete sentences)
5.
Did you and/or your group experience any challenges with designing your city? Explain. (1+
complete sentences)
6.
Attach a photo of your group’s design draft with appropriate labels for each feature/object.
