Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory describes a child’s development as a result of the environment around them. He breaks the environment down into 5 systems: micro-, meso-, exo-, macro-, and chrono-. The microsystem pertains to those that the child is in contact with daily, immediate family members, teachers, and peers. This is where bidirectional influences start taking place. The child is absorbing everything from home and school, if these are not positive experiences from either then the child’s behavior will mirror that. For example, if a child’s parents don’t yell and exhibit negative emotions when the child misbehaves, there is a better chance that the child will not be aggressive when they are in trouble or when a peer does something they do not agree with. By being patient and mild with your child when they have done something shows them how to behave when they experience something adverse. The mesosystem is the relationship between the child’s microsystems. A positive relationship between a child’s teacher and parents will positively affect their development because everyone is on the same page and mimicking the environment from one place to the other. I have a nephew who just started school and his teacher and mom are constantly communicating about what kind of day he has. If he did not have a good day, they work together to see what may have gone wrong or what can be done in the future to avoid whatever happened. The exosystem contains indirect influences on the child such as the parents’ workplace, extended family members, friends, and neighbors. This system also affects the child before it is born. If the parents have a good support system it helps with the stresses of becoming new parents, whether it’s by helping prepare for the baby by providing necessities or working in a stress-free environment. The macrosystem consists of values, cultural influences, and laws. This can range from having the option to give birth at home as opposed to the hospital, or lower income parents having access to parenting classes or supplemental nutrition. All the systems within the ecological systems theory affect how a child develops from gestation to adulthood. I do not have children of my own, but when my sister was pregnant, she had Hyperemesis Gravidarum, and she was very sick. She and her husband moved in with us so that we could help her and so that she could receive better care here in Georgia. The baby was born healthy, but he had colic for the first few weeks. My parents and other sisters were able to step in when he would cry throughout the night and help with whatever they may have needed
during the day. This helped both parents out tremendously because they were able to get the rest they needed to take care of themselves and the new baby. A lot of cultures have practices where the mom rests and recovers for days/weeks while others within their immediate family and extended family help with the new baby. This not only helps new parents merge into parenthood, but it also helps the child’s future development because they are surrounded by positive connected relationships everywhere they go.
