Fall2023-II - Week 1 Assignment In this assignment, you will find out the memory, CPU and networking configuration of your PC/Mac and of the VirtualBox VM. Follow the instructions given below and answer the questions . Provide the information in the table. Provide screenshots of your work. NOTE: Your document must include the following table filled in with the information used in the assignment. Your Name Student ID Question Answer IPv4 address of your PC/Mac IPv6 address of your PC/Mac # of cores Amount of RAM DHCP IP address Bridged adapter IPv4 address of the VM Host-only IPv4 address of the VM NAT-network IPv4 address of the VM 1. Information about your PC/Mac a. Windows PC users, download and install WinSCP and MobaXterm (personal edition) b. What is the IPv4 address of your PC or Mac? c. What is the IPv6 address of your PC or Mac? d. How many cores does your PC/Mac have? e. How much RAM does your PC have? f. What is the IP address of your PC/Mac's DHCP server? (Hint: this should be your router) 2. Using VirtualBox ( for Windows PC users and Macbooks with Intel CPUs) a. Download and install VirtualBox b. Create a NAT network and optionally give it a name containing your name 1
Fall2023-II - Week 1 Assignment c. Create a host-only adapter (look in the Assignment slides for further details) a. Download the preconfigured Centos VM image provided in Blackboard b. Import the CentosVM o Configure VM memory and CPU o In the network settings, add 3 adapters for your VM (NOTE: you have to first create the host-only and NAT network adapters in VirtualBox) Bridged Network for your wifi adapter Host-only adapter NAT network (optional) o Take screenshots of the network adapter settings c. Give a name to the VM. Name of the VM must contain your name. Ex. john-centos d. Start the VM o user id: root o password: abcd1234 b. Run the Linux date command to display the current date and time. Take screenshot c. Run the "ip a" command. o What are the IPv4 addresses assigned to the VM? o Take a screenshot after running the "ip a" command. o There must be 4-5 IP addresses shown. 1 each for the adapters, 1 for Docker and 1 for localhost. o Fill in the table with the IP address for each of the 3 adapters. o ignore the IP 127.0.0.1 address and also the Docker IP address 3. Connecting to the VM Take a look at this site to learn about the ping command : https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/ping-usage-basics a. Connect to the Centos VM using ssh (Mac users) or MobaXterm (Windows). NOTE: Use the Bridged adapter or the Host-only adapter IP address to connect to the VM b. On the Linux VM, run the 'ping' command with an external URL (ex. www.google.com). What were the results? c. On the Linux VM, run the 'ping' command with the host PC (mac or Windows) using it's IP address, that you saw in 1b above. What were the results? NOTE: If ping does not return any results, then stop the Windows or Mac firewall temporarily and then run ping again. Re-enable the firewall after the assignment is completed. d. Run the 'date' command on the Linux VM and take a screenshot 4. Using Docker HTTP container Site for docker commands : https://docs.docker.com/engine/reference/commandline/docker/ 2
Fall2023-II - Week 1 Assignment a. Start the docker program if it is not running using the command: systemctl start docker b. Start the httpd container ( docker run -dit --name http-server -p 8080:80 httpd) c. Run the command "docker ps" and take a screenshot d. Run the ss command, using the options shown in the lecture, combined with with grep to verify that the server is listening on port 8080. Provide the screenshot e. Open a browser and type the IP address and port 8080 of the Centos VM. What was the result? 5. DNS setup a. Assign a name to the host PC's or Mac's IP address (ex. john-pc) by adding a line to the VM's /etc/hosts file. Run the 'ping' command using the hostname. What were the results? o NOTE: Please don't assign a name starting with www or ending with .com/.home etc. Keep the name simple such as "johnPC" or "johnLinux". b. On the host PC/Mac, assign a name to the VM, such as john-centos-vm c. Run the 'ping' command to test the configuration. I.e. ping the Centos VM using the name from your Windows PC/Mac d. SSH to the VM using the name e. From the PC/Mac's browser, run the HTTP url (of the docker container created in 4b above) but using the VM's name instead of the IP address. Did that work? f. Provide screenshots of the DNS entries in Windows/Mac hosts file and the hosts file on Linux VM. 6. Shutdown a. Stop and remove the docker container. Use "docker stop" and then "docker rm" commands b. Shutdown the Centos VM Requirements for the assignments: The assignment write-up must contain a brief description of what you did along with screen shots of the installation and execution of your programs. Papers and write-up must be submitted as Word or PDF. All screenshots must be included in one document. Providing separate PNG/JPG files will not be accepted All program code must be provided in a zip file 3
