Week 7 Examine one of the modes of transportation and discuss the complexities the U.S. faces when securing it. Explore another mode of transportation and discuss the complexities the U.S. faces when securing it. How important is critical infrastructure protection in overall transportation security? Hello Class, Securing modes of transportation is vital to ensuring the protection of goods, cargo, and personnel. Modes of transportation are susceptible to attacks, like the attack on 9/11, due to the inadequate security, the wide array of area it covers, and the many roads, railroads, etc. One of the modes of transportation that I believe is complex to secure is the Highway and Motor Carrier. This system is compromised of commercial vehicles, school bus operations, and transportation infrastructure (Zaffar, 2019). Because this system has more than 4 million miles of roadway and thousands of tunnels and bridges, it is difficult to fully secure this mode of transportation completely. Commercial vehicles must continue to travel on these roadways to keep the nations economy and global markets afloat. Children must continue to ride buses to school to continue their educational goals. Due to the vast amount of vehicles that utilize this mode of transportation, it is difficult to monitor what vehicles have Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED). The high-risk scenario that could potentially cause great harm to this mode of transportation is an attack utilizing a VBIED. The last mode of transportation I believe the U.S. faces great complexities when trying to secure it is the Aviation. The Aviation mode of transportation consists of all aircraft assets and approximately 19,700 airports that consist of commercial and military airports. This mode of transportation is complex when trying to secure it due to the different types of technology that is difficult to detect, the international and domestic flights, and the evolving threats of cybersecurity. Aircraft can be utilized as a weapon while either using it as a weapon of mass destruction, by carrying CBRN material, or having an IED on board with a passengered terrorist. There are millions of people who fly into the United States a year. Although there is TSA who is established to secure this mode of travel, due to the emerging technology it makes it difficult for TSA to capture everything ( 2020 Biennial National Strategy for Transportation Security , 2020). Critical infrastructure protection is extremely important in overall transportation security. If there is an event that effects any mode of transportation would cause a domino effect to critical infrastructure. An attack on a mode of transportation would also cause impacts to the supply chain of the United States.
