University of Waterloo – PD 1 p. 1 ASSIGNMENT 5: PERSONAL PITCH Student Name: Viyanna Koul Part A: Networking Scenarios You will begin this assignment by coming up with two of your own networking scenarios (requires you to think realistically about what you might encounter given your career stage, field of study, etc.). You will then choose a scenario (your own or one we've suggested) to use in the remainder of the assignment. First, describe two networking scenarios you think you might encounter in the near future (or scenarios you’ve already encountered and wish you had been more prepared for) 1. 1. as a current economics student, i participated in the UW Economics Club, and got a chance to connect with fellow students and faculty to discuss economic trends, job opportunities, and research projects. 2. I find myself at a family friend's house, where I encounter someone working in my desired industry and the exact position i want. The following are a few possible scenarios we came up with. 3. You find someone you'd like to connect with through Ten Thousand Coffee's Search and Discovery feature and want to start the conversation. 4. You are attending an industry meetup and find yourself sitting at a table with the manager at a company you have heard great things about. They don’t work in your dream department, but still might be a valuable contact. 5. A relative gives you the email address of a family friend who is working in the same industry you hope to go into. 6. You find yourself on a plane sitting next to a chatty person. They don’t work in your field, but you find out they do work at a company that you’ve heard great things about and are interested in. 7. You attend a virtual networking event where you can browse through employers and connect via video conferencing to discuss potential job opportunities. 8. A company you are following on Instagram launches a funny photo contest. They ask entrants to include a short blurb about
University of Waterloo – PD 1 p. 2 themselves. You would have participated in the contest anyways, but this also seems like an opportunity to carefully promote yourself as a potential future employee. 9. You're browsing LinkedIn for new opportunities and come across a job that you think you'd be great for. You want to connect with the employer to ask a few questions before submitting your application. 10. A guest speaker in one of your classes discusses an aspect of your field you are very interested in. You approach them after class. Choose one of the above scenarios (by checking a box) . You can choose your own or one we’ve provided. Part B: Crafting Your Personal Pitch, Part 1 In this section, you will answer specific questions about your chosen scenario. Your answers will form the ingredients of the personal pitch you write in Part C. Each of these elements was referred to in the unit lesson. It can be very hard to create a pitch for an abstract scenario so make up some concrete details (e.g. For scenario 3, pick a specific person; For scenario 5, identify the industry; For scenario 7, choose an employer, etc.).
University of Waterloo – PD 1 p. 3 Part C: Crafting Your Personal Pitch, Part 2 Who are you giving your pitch to? - What industry do they work in? - What company do they work for? - What is their role within that company/industry? Provide concrete details here so your TA knows the context of your pitch. Giving my personal pitch to this person on the plane can be beneficial because it allows me to gain insight into a company i am interested in working for. Even though the person may not work in my specific field, they may have connections within the company that can help me build a network. By sharing my interest and showcasing my skills, this employee can get to know me better and potentially recommend to someone who works in my desired field. WHY do you want to give this person your personal pitch? What are you hoping to achieve? i want to give this person my personal pitch to gain valuable insights about the company i want to join. While they might not work in my field, their potential connections with the company could help me expland my network and possibly lead to a recommendation to someone in my desired role. What relevant pieces of information do you think you should convey? I should convey my educational background, career goals, pasison for the industry, relevant skills etc. What specific knowledge, skills, and/or experience will you highlight? i would highlight my work in economics, relevant projects/internships, data analytic skills, and my drive for contributing to the company. What could you say to express your interest in them, their company, or the industry in general? I would express my genuine interest in them, the company and the industry by highlighting my admiration for the companys acheivements, my eagerness to contibute and my passion as a driving force in my career aspirations. What question or leading statement could you use to engage the person in conversation? "Im really interested by your company. Could you share your experience working here and what you find most rewarding about it?" Anything else you want or need to consider? (optional)

University of Waterloo – PD 1 p. 4 In this section, you put all the pieces together and craft a cohesive personal pitch that will take only 30 to 45 seconds to give. Hello, I'm Viyanna Koul, an honors mathematical economics student in my second year at the University of Waterloo. I overheard your conversation about the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, a company I'm passionate about due to my interest in economics. Besides my coursework, I've engaged in projects related to banking and econ research. I'm drawn to your company as it aligns with my career aspirations. My strengths include a competitive drive, analytical abilities, and sound business acumen. I'm eager to explore exciting opportunities. Would you be open to sharing insights about CIBC and reviewing my resume when you have the chance? Part D: Reflect As a final step, you will reflect on your process, specifically on how you customized your pitch for the scenario you chose. In the chosen scenario, I iniated by starting a conversation with the person seated next to me on the plane. Instead of crafting a formal email, I opened by acknowledging their discussion about CIBC, a banking institution. I began by emphasizing my dedication as an economics student, a field closely related to the financial sector. I also shared some relevant experiences, highlighting my eagerness to contribute to CIBC's economic initiatives. Furthermore, I mentioned specific skills I believe could benefit the bank and asked for their personal insights and ideas about CIBC from an economic perspective. This approach aimed to create an authentic conversation rather than coming across as overly focused on job-seeking.
