Krzysztof Czarnecki, Sep. 14, 2023 1 Writing the project abstract The project abstract should state one of the five project categories and the problem that the software will address, why the problem is important and why it is challenging, sketch the envisioned solution at a high level, state how it is different from existing solutions, and state the expected value or impacts of the outcomes and how you plan to assess them. You can also indicate the expected learning from doing this project. As you start your development, you do not have to stick exactly to what you have proposed originally—you have the flexibility to adjust the topic and scope, or even pivot, as you gain experience. If you pivot, just submit an new abstract. The course syllabus schedule for weeks 1 and 2 identifies sections in the SE Capstone Handbook with techniques you can use to come up with a suitable project idea. Required items When writing the abstract, include the following items (see §13.9 in the SE Handbook) : 1. Opportunity and problem a. What is the opportunity that your software will exploit? b. Why is the problem worth solving? c. Who will use it or benefit from it? d. What problem will it solve? 2. Objective a. What does this system/project will accomplish within the given context? 3. Plausible design approach a. What is the high-level solution approach that will be pursued? 4. Expected benefits over existing alternatives and impact a. What are the main competing solutions in the field or marketplace? b. What is the main advantage of your solution over the existing ones? c. What is the expected impact of your solution? 5. Summary of expected results a. What evidence do you plan to gathered to demonstrate that the objective has been accomplished? See §14.2 for common approaches and targets based on project category. Revising your abstract When writing abstract or a report, consider improving it iteratively. Revising the abstract for clear structure and conciseness will allow you to arrive at an optimal result (see §13.9 ). Consider this initial version of an abstract of a consulting project as an example:
Krzysztof Czarnecki, Sep. 14, 2023 2 “Sana is a cross-disciplinary organization that uses open-source technologies to improve healthcare around the world. Sana Mobile, an initiative of the organization, allows doctors to formally define medical procedures using an XML syntax known as the Sana Protocol. Sana Protocol Builder is a graphical web application which aids doctors in the creation of these procedures, automatically generating the resulting XML for use by remote field workers via the Sana Mobile app.” This is a good starting point, but when you go over the list of the expected items, it is not clear whether they are covered or not. Let’s revise it to include each item clearly ( opportunity , problem , objective , plausible design approach , expected benefits over existing alternatives , and summary of results ): “Sana is a cross-disciplinary organization that uses open-source technologies to improve healthcare around the world. Sana Mobile, an initiative of the organization, allows doctors to formally define medical procedures using an XML syntax known as the Sana Protocol in order to improve their repeatability and quality control and ultimately their success rate. A major obstacle in reaching these benefits is the lack of a usable tool that would allow doctors to easily create such protocols. Our objective is the develop Sana Protocol Builder to address this challenge. We envision the solution as a graphical web application for defining the procedures from predefined templates, which will then automatically generate the resulting XML for use by remote field workers via the Sana Mobile app. The resulting application will provide an easier to use, less error prone, and faster solution than the current approach in Sana of using a generic XML editor to define the protocols. The improved usability is expected to significantly increase the adoption of Sana and help realize its societal benefits. The project will perform user evaluation with doctors to measure the usability improvements and track the increase in protocol definitions and their quality due to the solution. Abstract file template Make sure that you abstract submission includes the project title, project category, names and WatIM user ids of the members. Put your abstract into abstract.md (markdown file) and submit it to the course repo according to the instructions in the syllabus. Use the following elements: # <Project title>
