ORG/726: The Impact Of Technology On Organizations Week 1 Discussion The topic or issue that resonates the most with me from this week's readings is the concept of Technological appropriation. The perceived consensus of technological appropriation refers to the extent to which employees perceive agreement on how technology should be used in their work tasks and adopted into their organization, (Barrett, 2018). When someone is presented with a new technology, he or she appropriates this tool by ‘adapting’ it in a goal-directed activity. That someone must make sense of the properties of the tool and find ‘a way of doing’ to perform the activity. When a group of people is presented with a tool, technological appropriation occurs on the level of the group. In this case, the group must make sense of the technology, and adapt it in a joint activity. Based on my understanding of the concept, Technology Appropriation occurs when someone puts into use a technology in a goal-directed activity while the properties of the technology, and the acts required to accomplish the goal by means of the technology, are unacquainted. The primary question that remains unanswered from these readings is how Technological appropriation can be effectively taught and developed in organizations. I gained a great deal from reading these articles . Prior to this week's academic reading, I knew nothing about the concept of Technological appropriation. Technology makes certain rules and resources available, and it provides opportunities for interaction that would be hard to achieve without technology. However, technology appropriation does not simply refer to the acquisition of knowledge about an object, or to ‘learning how to’ do or apply something with technology, (Vermeerbergen, 2022). Appropriation of technology simultaneously transforms users and technology. It does not only cause a change in the knowledge and skill of the user, but it also causes a change in the properties of the technology. However, I do realize that I need to complete further research on Technological appropriations and how organizations can benefit from this purpose.
