CITC-2367-C01 – Cloud Essentials
Module 4.2 Assignment – Rip & Replace vs Lift & Shift
Module 4.1 Assignment – Rip & Replace vs. Lift & Shift
A rip & replace migration is a strategy that “involves a complete re-design of the application from scratch using only cloud-native components.” (Lerro, 2018) This method is disruptive as it involves full rewrites of code and may have a downstream impact. It can also be more costly at the outset than other methods, as a company may need to upskill its workforce. However, rip & replace is the only way to get full use of cloud capabilities as you are not trying to retrofit older software into modern infrastructure.
A lift & shift migration strategy is essentially the opposite. Using your current software/infrastructure, you simply move it to the respective cloud component. This method is a “fast and easy way to perform a migration [and] requires fewer or no changes to existing software.” (Lerro, 2018) There are some significant disadvantages, however: by using legacy software not designed for the cloud, you can lose out of many
of the perks of being in the cloud such as scalability, disaster recovery, and cost optimization. Additionally, as time moves on, the application will continue to age and will
likely need to be updated/replaced anyway.
In the long run, having a fully cloud-implemented component would be optimal, and so a rip & replace strategy would be appealing. If there is an immediate need to move a component to the cloud, then a lift & shift migration would be preferred. The best strategy would be a combined effort: lift & shift those that need it quickly, rip & replace those that can wait. Once done, update the components that were lifted & CITIC 1334 - Project Management I

shifted to be more cloud-enabled. This is a longer-term strategy, but one that would likely benefit all aspects.
