Assignment 2 - Data analysis and visualisation Due: 4 August, 11:55pm  (Week 6) Weighting: 60% (30% team project; 30% individual analysis) Type: Group Format: Multimedia presentation and a public tableau file Length: Presentation: 10-20 minutes (~15 slides); Individual report: 700 words You will be allocated into groups of three students. As a team of consultants you will employ data-based problem solving to find a solution to the Council of Kings County project brief (see below). The focus of this assignment is the creation of data visualisations, data-based analysis and problem solving, and business storytelling with visualisations. The data are contained in a csv file called Kinds County, USA (see below) . Kings County, USA CSV File Project brief: The future of housing in Kings County, USA Aim: The state council of Kings County seeks to analyse the houses sold in the region over a period of time (for which the dataset is provided) to positively influence the future of people living in the county. Objectives: To plan for the future of housing in Kings County by: 1. making living spaces more inclusive. For example: Avoid pockets of areas or regions where expensive but small houses are limited to or located in one particular area. Redistribute housing density to incentivise areas where fewer houses are sold to increase density in that area 2. reducing the costs of creating new infrastructure (e.g. roads, utility pipelines, etc.) Goals: The consultancy team will produce an analysis of the provided dataset and key recommendations about the houses sold in the area. This will be presented via webconference in a meeting with the directors of the Council of Kings County. Notes: The presented analysis and recommendation, if accepted by the council, will be key for the future of people living in the county as they will be the ones directly impacted by
investments made by the council. The dataset should not be augmented with other publicly available documents / datasets / knowledge. Consultancy teams must restrict their analysis to this dataset only and draw insights from whatever information / data is given to you. After reviewing the Tableau resources for instructional videos and demonstrations, use Tableau to analyse the Council of Kings County’s dataset and make a number of small visualisations to form your data story. When you make your visualisations be sure to add the necessary elements to make them nicely finished presentations (i.e., include a title, annotations, sorting, colouring/highlighting, etc. as you see fit to best communicate your message). Your solution will be submitted in two (2) parts: Part A: Team presentation and worksheets (30%) Step 1: Data exploration For each of the data variables present in the dataset, determine which fields are considered as dimensions and which fields are considered as measures and justify your team decision making. Explain any data variable changes that you have done for the exercise. e.g. Changed a variable from Numeric / Integer to String or any date format change Step 2: Research questions Gather five (5) key questions that could be answered using different data visualisations and justify your selection with reference to the project brief. Step 3: Analysis Analyse the type of houses that are present in the county e.g. Can there be a segmentation created basis the # bedrooms / # bathrooms etc.? Step 4: Create a visual data story Create visualisations to address your team’s five (5) research questions. Determine the story or message for your data visualisations. Build an interactive data visualisation to tell your story using Tableau. For each of the visualisations created: 1. Save your Tableau workbook to Tableau Public (a free cloud service) to present and share your Viz with a live link in your report. Also, you can take a copy of applicable graph or chart from your Tableau visualisations and add this to your presentation 2. Explain your reasons for using each particular visualisation type 3. Outline the insights that can be inferred from your visualisation Post your resulting worksheets to the assignment submission link and the Tableau visualisations to the Tableau Public web space.
Note: You will need to make a Tableau public login. Once you have saved the public tableau file, you just need to post the URL for your work on the Tableau Public web space on your assignment presentation. Step 5: Analysis and recommendations Provide an analysis of the situation of houses sold in that area . Provide implications of your study on the future of the people of Kings County: Were there any ethical questions discussed amongst the team while working on this exercise? Present recommendations to the council. Step 6: Presentation and storytelling Construct your 15 slide (maximum), 20-minute (maximum) presentation to the directors of the Council of Kings County Include one (1) slide which explains clearly the roles and responsibilities of each of the members of your team. Refer to the Global MBA video presentation guide and digital storytelling guide . Part B: Individual analysis (30%) To communicate the analytical skills of each member of the team, you (each individual in the team) will submit a one-page (700 words maximum) executive summary for the directors of the Council of Kings County outlining your: 1. Understanding of the problem/s (problem statement) 2. Analysis of the data (analysis) 3. Key recommendations (possible solutions)
