UNIT 1 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
Abstract
I am the IT Manager for an elementary school and received a request to put together some recently donated computers into the school’s current network. An extended star topology has been recommended using some of the current hubs. A switch will be combined
to play the role of the backbone switch, and the hubs will be changed within the budget I have been given. There are twelve classrooms and one library. Every classroom has twenty-
four students but can hold up to thirty-two students. The notion is that every classroom will have twenty-four computers and we will use a stackable Hub solution linking a twelve- port hub and a twenty-four- port hub making it thirty-six hubs total. The goal is to upgrade six classrooms and the one library promptly and finish the rest of the classrooms next year. 1

UNIT 1 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
If the library is close to all 12 classrooms around 90 meters, then I believe Ethernet would be the best choice for the network media for the school, which will connect its switch to all the rooms hubs. If by chance a classroom is more than 90 meters away from the library, then an ethernet extender device will be installed. The Ethernet cabling will remain in the same spot and the hubs can be upgraded if needed later on. The Ethernet Hub will transmit signals to the schools. The ethernet hub is a simple and cheap way to build a network of computers together (Technology, 2018).
IP addresses are necessary for all the computers. The school has recommended that we use only 2 public addresses within their budget. So, we will use the network address translation or NAT (Barrett, 2005). We need 174 IP addresses for the students’ computers, 4
for the server, and Switch. Which brings the total to 178 IP addresses. A private Class B network will be the network used. 2

The two Public IP addresses will be fine for every classroom and library to gain access to
the internet. The router will have 2 interfaces. When it comes to the network media for the school, which already has a 36-port allowance of switches. Then wireless networks will let us move around the layouts of each classroom. Wireless networks will also provide us with not as much planning on where to put the cables. Although, we need to run the cable in certain areas and or walls, to avoid any hazards or damage. If we used a network that is wired, CAT-6 cables would be the one I would choose. Every classroom and library will need a total of 7 multi-port stackable switches. In which I would use the Cisco Catalyst 3850
series switches. To make sure we stay within the school budget, a list of items and prices will be written down before starting. By doing this it will assist with the current and future budgets. With the school’s budget, we will not be able to purchase the most current equipment available, but we still have other options that will work, if not better. The equipment we will
be using is the Cisco Catalyst WS-C3850-24T-S Layer 3 Switch is $4,675.92 each (PCNation, 2023), Netgear router are around $109.00 on eBay (eBay, 2023), network connectors go for around $21.99 each (eBay, 2023), and ethernet cable 1,000 feet which cost roughly $159.99 each on eBay (eBay). 3
