1 Computer crime is typically broken into four categories. Each category encompasses multiple crimes. The four categories are: cybertrespass, cyber-pornography, cyberviolence, and cyberdeception and theft. Cybertrespassing is what most people would consider “hacking.” It is gaining unauthorized access to computer systems. There are generally two classifications of people who engage in this type of computer crime. People with little computer skills and those with high computer skills. The lower-skilled individuals manipulate others into providing the tools to gain access to the system or buy tools developed by more skilled personnel. The ones with more skills are the ones who find the system vulnerabilities themselves and devise ways to exploit them. Depending on the motives, many avenues can be taken once the criminal has access to the system. However, some of the more closely related ones are data theft, alteration of data, and sabotage of computer functions (Graham & Smith, 2020). Cyberdeception and theft are usually preceded by cybertrespassing but not always and simply put is using digital means to lie or steal. Identity theft, digital piracy, and phishing are just a few examples of this category of computer crime. There is some level of deception and theft in all these types. Identity theft for example is obtaining/using someone’s personal information through deception or fraud (Graham & Smith, 2020). When someone is harmed via digital means, that is considered cyberviolence. That may be confusing because it is not possible to physically harm someone via the internet but cyberviolence is inflicting psychological harm or threatening to do so. Some examples of cyberviolence are cyberbullying, hate speech, and cyberstalking. All these crimes inflict emotional harm or threaten physical harm to the victim (Graham & Smith, 2020).
2 The final category of computer crime is cyber-pornography. Not all pornography is illegal, but the most common type that is, is child pornography. Some pornography is so obscene that it also falls into a criminal category. Sexting can also be illegal depending on varying circumstances (Sex Crimes, 2018).
