Week 1 Discussion Question 1: Do you think that this is true? Friedman's book was published over 10 years ago. What other IS & Technology developments have affected the conduct of global business in that period? After researching Thomas Freidman and his theory around “the world is flat '', I agree with him that both individual and corporate/firm commerce have a leveled playing field when competing for commerce globally. He examines the ten forces that drove his theory, which were the steppingstones to what has continued to be true over the past decade. Since Freidman’s book was published, the increase of digitization, technology and different Information systems has changed the way the world evolves, gathers and processes information. There are a lot of different IS & technology developments that have affected global business over the past decade, but I want to focus on a few specifically. The first being the continued enhancement of the internet and growth of social media. This has allowed for all businesses to innovate their traditional ways of marketing and establish new business models to consumers and vice versa, with consumers being able to have unlimited amount information at their fingertips to make educated purchases on products and services. Social media has also allowed global connections at the touch of a button, allowing for unlimited information on news, business, weather, commerce, etc. Next, the creation of the cloud has enhanced the ways that data and information has been saved over the past decade. Information can be shared and examined much faster and is also more accessible for both business and consumer behavior. Finally, the creation and innovation of electric vehicles (EV) on a global scale has had a huge impact on global business. Companies for example, like Tesla, have created a four-wheel mobile information system that has allowed for major improvements to our infrastructure. One social impact that has affected technology developments has been the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether you’re an individual or corporate/firm commerce, COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the way the world has evolved into more of a digital remote setting. For example, I have been working remotely since the beginning of the pandemic. Our systems and protocols have evolved into a virtual
landscape from a traditional corporate setting, which has helped global business. Question 2: What factors mitigate against a "flat world" for global commerce? Are these technology-related, or are they related to social, economic, or political factors? Factors that mitigate against a “flat world” theory for global commerce are more related to social, economic and political factors rather than technology related issues. I believe this to be true based on a few factors. From an economic standpoint, there are countries around the world that are very poor and unstable. They do not have the technology to be able to implement different types of information systems in order to enhance their economy. This prevents them from creating jobs, obtaining and reducing costs of goods and services easily, in addition to innovating current business models that are comparable to models utilized in more eco-friendly countries. Social issues that can also mitigate global commerce include language barriers between countries, as well as religious and cultural differences. These factors separate countries both internally and externally. The different currency that each country uses can also slow and stop the creation of new information systems. Finally, political policies can also completely ignore and stop the enhancements of information systems. Countries like North Korea, who live under complete dictatorship and don’t allow their citizens to have much if not any technology including social media, and the internet both for business and consumer behavior. Question 3: In several analysis articles, McKinsey Quarterly writers suggest that most of the economic benefits from digitization have gone to consumers rather than companies - mainly because of the improved access to information that consumers have, concerning competition, pricing, and product alternatives. Can you think of some examples?
I agree that the economic benefit from digitization has benefited the consumer more rather than companies. With the enhancements of social media, the internet, and how much information consumers have when deciding on certain products and product alternatives, almost any product on the market today can be researched and compared to its competitors. A few examples I thought of include, physical books versus eBooks, desktop computers versus laptop computers, and gas vehicles versus electric vehicles. EBooks have become a much more viable and easier option when compared to traditional physical books. With the advancements of different platforms that eBooks are accessible on, which include Kindle, Apple products, and other eBook tablets, you have immediate access rather than waiting for your physical book to be delivered. Also, the price of an eBook is drastically cheaper than a physical copy. Laptop computers are another advancement of regular desktop computers. There are many advantages for consumers to use a laptop over a desktop. These include cheaper costs at purchase and to fix, and accessibility from anywhere rather than just at your desk. It also allows you to bring all your information and information system with you, which is huge for how global information is today, especially for traveling consumers. Finally, the big debate over the pros and cons of electric vehicles versus traditional gas vehicles. With the recent increase in gas prices, electric vehicles have become a huge product alternative that can save consumers not only money presently, but also a significant amount of money moving forward. Like I mentioned in my response to question one above, electric vehicles are also a huge information system, which is another advantage compared to traditional gas vehicles, which are limited in the amount of information they can consume. Finally, electric vehicles are more environmentally friendly, which is a big win for consumers today. Question 4: If you wanted to start up a new business now, how would you go about researching specific groups of customers who have unmet demand or specialist needs that a small business might satisfy with customized products more easily than a large business? What sort of product or services might you offer to these customers?

Before starting a new business, you need to find the problem. Then, you must research and brainstorm the solution to the problem, whether that is through a product or a service. The way I would start a new business is after identifying the problem, I would then provide surveys, questionnaires, and/or interviews to a specific customer group with unmet demands that I am targeting. For small businesses, conducting these different customer research helps gather more personal and detailed information that will help with your product/service formation and narrow your target audience. I would start a Social Media Consultant company that focuses on the needs and wants of small businesses, entrepreneurs, streamers and influencers on different platforms. Most small businesses have so much on their plate, they forget the importance of what social media can really do for their business. My services offered would be to help decide what content to post, best time to post, finding your specific target audience and managing your revenue through the different social media that we are promoting. We would promote on almost all the social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and any other platform your business would like to promote on. I would also like to create a one stop platform that manages all the different social media platforms, which we would create as our own information system for your specific business model.
