Interview
The following interview was conducted with the Director of Information Technology &
Operations of North Carolina State University. The position is critical in the supervision,
management, and regulation of IT services and facilities within the institution. For ethical
purposes in the interview request, the interviewee was assured that personal information will not

implemented by the company; the interview was conducted via video conferencing. The
interview was focused on understanding the interviewee's position and duties; the first question
asked was “What is your job title?” His response was “I’m currently the corporate IT services
manager.” The next question was “how long have you been working in IT? How long have you
been working as an IT manager?”
his response was, “I have been working in the IT industry for
over two decades. In other words, I partook a curriculum in information technology while in
college and have been in the sector since my graduation. As an IT manager, the position has been
held for less than a decade. It is my first experience as a manager with diverse roles and
expectations.”
The next interview question was, “what are the required skills and training needed to
perform your role in your organization?” He offered the following response, “the position skills
and training depend on the demands of the facility or institution, however, from a basic
perspective, problem-solving skill, leadership traits, effective approach to prioritization, and
comprehension of complex situations. The minimum academic qualifications are a Bachelor's
degree in Information Technology, information systems, or any related field. industry experience
of at least 4 years is mandatory. The purpose is to ensure the individual can address issues
effectively.” He added, “the IT industry is evolving rapidly and not being able to cope with the

change can have severe consequences.” The notion led to the next question, “To what extent do
you communicate and collaborate with others both inside and outside of your organization? How
important is communication and collaboration in order to deliver business performance
excellence in your organization?”
The interviewee responded by stating “communication and collaboration is the
foundation of an effective IT department. So, in response to the question, communication and
collaboration within and outside the organization are high, the result is the effective delivery of
services within the institution.” In correlation to the response, I asked “From your perspective,
describe the significance of building relationships with your followers based on mutual trust and
respect.” He stated, “the IT sector’s efficacy is based on the ability to trust one another therefore,
I believe that building trust and respect is a critical necessity.” In a bid to understand his
perspective is asked, “what specific characteristics do you like to see in your followers? And
Why do you value these characteristics the most?” He responded by stating, “I seek traits such as
honesty, accountability, respect, and reliability. I prefer the traits as it means I can dictate duties
with the prospects of quality results.”
Due to unexpected limitations, I was given the opportunity for one last question which
was, “what are the most common issues you face on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis?
Determine the cause of the issues and describe the strategies for effectively managing them.” His
response was, “my most common daily issues are addressing current network infrastructural
issues. Depending on the scale of the issue it may become a weekly problem, however, on a
monthly basis, it entails updating current infrastructure based on the limited funding. IT
equipment is expensive and the current pandemic has made the issue more severe.” The response
marked the end of the interview.
