Module 4 Discussion What are the key high-speed networking services available for wide-area networking? Key high-speed networking services available for wide-area networking (WAN) include leased lines, Frame Relay, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), and Ethernet WAN services (Cisco, n.d.). Which one would you recommend for a college campus? The choice of a specific WAN service for a college campus will depend on factors like budget, the required bandwidth, reliability, and security needs. For most college campuses, a combination of technologies might be the best approach. I would suggest considering a combination of MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network). They would use MPLS for critical applications and services that require guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS), low latency, and high reliability. This can include services like VoIP, video conferencing, and mission-critical data applications. MPLS is known for its reliability and ability to prioritize traffic. On the other side, they would Implement SD-WAN to complement MPLS for more flexible and cost-effective connectivity for non-critical traffic and to optimize the use of multiple WAN links, such as broadband and cellular connections. SD- WAN can help balance the load and provide redundancy, ensuring that the network remains robust and adaptable. What are the uses for value added network (VAN) and very private network (VPN)? How do VAN and VPN work? VAN is a private network that offers additional services on top of traditional connectivity, such as enhanced security, Quality of Service (QoS), and monitoring. They are useful for organizations
with specific needs, like colleges looking to provide secure, reliable connections for students and staff (Frankenfield, 2022). VPNs create secure, encrypted connections over public networks like the internet. They are essential for securing data in transit and providing remote access for students and faculty. VPNs can be layered on top of other WAN services, adding an extra layer of security ( Kaspersky, 2023) . References Cisco. (n.d.). What Is a WAN?
