Instructions on the Final Project
This course focuses on a specific project that will be explored in consultation
with the instructor of the course and possibly other faculty mentors. The
completed project will include a project report, an interactive visualization
publishable on a website, and a final oral presentation of your project. This
course necessitates multiple drafts of your research report that is subjected
to peer review and regular feedback from your instructor. The primary focus
of your project will be finding a solution to a business problem using data and
analytics. You may address U.S. business problems, or problems in other
organizations globally. In this project, you will write a “data story” considering
the problem, the data, the analytics methods, the solution, and your insights.
At the end of this assignment, the student will be able to:
Employ the conventions (style, format, organization, use of evidence,
and citation expectations) of the business analytics discipline in all
formal written work
Compose writing that reflects awareness of the rhetorical situation
(audience, context, and purpose) of the document
Compose writing that is free from mechanical errors and clarity
problems
Instructions
Each student will complete a capstone project. You should follow the steps
below:
1)
Propose a project topic. Write a page about what you wish to explore and identify the business problem you want to investigate. In case the topic you want to explore lacks data, propose a second project topic as a backup in another page. Assume your audience is a business manager with no data analytics technical background. Your proposal should be directed to convince the manager to see the importance of the problem which can be solved by data analytics.
2)
Complete a literature review to see what has been done so far about this problem. Employ the academic conventions in your review. Look for the most relevant literature (no more than 10 citations – APA style). Summarize findings from each article/book in a paragraph. Assume your audience is a person who would like to get a quick understanding of the problem on hand. 3)
Explain in writing how you intend to explore your project topic and solve the business problem. You may choose from a variety of approaches and methods, including descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics, and procedures from statistics, and data mining. Describe the method/model as if your audience is a person who has no knowledge of this method.
4)
Explain in writing how you intend to collect data for the approach you like to use to solve
the business problem. Try to predict the type of difficulties you may face in this step. Assume your audience is the business manager who will grant access to the company database or pay expenses to buy datasets.
5)
Once you have accessed the data, download it. Prepare the data for the application of your chosen method. Clearly describe what procedures you applied on the data to clean/tidy it. Assume your audience is a technical person who understands the terminology you use.
6
6)
Apply the method on the data. How does it perform? If this is a prediction task, how is the performance of the method on the training partition? On the validation partition? Would you consider switching to another method? Comment on the results as if your audience is a technical person who understands the terminology you use.
7)
Once you are sure that your model works satisfactorily, apply it on a new dataset. This data can be obtained from the Internet or made up for testing purposes. Comment on any difficulties and experiences in this step.
8)
Discussion: Answer the question of “so what?”. Discuss how the method/model you developed will solve the business problem on hand. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of this method. Benefits and costs. Discuss and predict possible implementation challenges (such as when applied on a large scale, regular basis). What is your final recommendation for the business manager. Assume your audience is the business manager.
9)
Conclusion: Summarize the business problem, your method, and findings. Write about the entire experience. What went smooth and what went wrong. Now that you have completed this investigation, what could be the next step or next investigation about this
specific business problem? What do you suggest for a future research paper? Assume your audience is the business manager.
NOTES:
Each of the items above required around 1-2 pages of text, double-spaced, in Times New
Roman, 12-point font. You need to produce four outputs (deliverables) from your project:
1)
A written paper in Word,
2)
An oral presentation using PowerPoint, presenting your problem and solution
3)
An Rmarkdown document in HTML, showing your code and short explanations,
4)
An interactive website visualization using basic Rstudio Shiny app, or PowerBI showing some interactive elements using your data and model
The organization of your research paper should be based on the following structure. Numbers in parentheses refer to the parts in the Instructions above.
Title
Name
Abstract
Introduction and Literature Review (Parts 1, 2)
Methodology (Parts 4,5,6,7)
Discussion (Part 8)
Conclusion (Part 9)
You will submit each written part on a regular basis when they are due. You will receive Pass or Fail grade for your submissions along with feedback for revisions. Your final deliverables will be graded by your timely response to my feedback and completing requested revisions. When I grade, I consider the quality of the content (up to date/correct information, satisfactory depth, critical thinking, creativity, unique perspective, reflection, etc.), as well as proper presentation of the content (organization,
6
correct medium, genre, language for the intended audience). Mechanics such as proper spelling, word use, sentence structure will also be considered in my grading. 6
