SDLC Activity: Additional Information & Readings Additional Background and Suggestions for the SDLC Activity: General Background on SDLC What is the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)? Links to an external site. Understanding the Phases of SDLC Links to an external site. Video: What is a Software Development Life Cycle? Links to an external site. How to approach the activity: First, you must read about the SDLC and listen/watch the module's course lecture videos and/or PPt slides Download PPt slides on systems development so you have a strong understanding of what the SDLC is. No matter what your background or career objectives are, you will be asked to get involved with the SDLC in your professional life in some way, so it's good to know about it. Second, understand that the objective of this assignment is to see if you can understand the SDLC well enough to be able to describe it in a different context, in this case developing a large, celebratory event. It turns out, the steps you would use in developing an IT application can be used in developing many other things, including an event. In this activity, we are asking you to describe the SDLC using an analogy - to "develop" and launch a personal (non- technology) event. Much like developing software, in the case of a large event you have to plan for it, analyze how you will construct and evaluate it, design the event, implement it, and finally support the event. At each phase of the event you will do the same kinds of
activities that are spelled out in the SDLC discussion, only applied to delivering a successful event. Finally, remember that your job is to show that you understand the SDLC and that you know how to apply it in a different context - planning an event. By clearly and explicitly describing the planning & execution of a complex personal event using the SDLC methodology, you will reinforce and illustrate your understanding of the SDLC model. A good submission on this assignment will make it clear to the reader that the SDLC methodology has been used to address the challenge of planning and delivering your identified event. Being able to translate technical ideas (whether they're IT, finance, accounting, marketing, or logistics ideas) into a more mainstream context is a good skill to possess, and is also a good way to explain things to people that may not understand your technical concepts. We ask you to do this because often IT leaders are asked to explain technical and arcane concepts to non-technical audiences. Most of all, try to have some fun with it.
