Policies of the Government and Care Coordination To ensure both safety and excellent care, the government passes restrictions. I will discuss two legislation, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), that directly affect care coordination. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was created by a presidential proclamation that was signed into law in 1996. It was the nation's first national statute protecting privacy in health care. Under HIPAA, the HHS established standards pertaining to the security and privacy of personal health information and electronic health records. Consequently, the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule were developed using HIPAA. Consequently, the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule were developed using HIPAA. The Privacy Rule mandates that a provider, clearinghouse, health plan, or other organization protect patient data and refrain from using or exchanging it. In order to safeguard electronic patient data covered by the HIPAA Security Rule, providers are required to follow a nationwide standard. Technical, administrative, and physical security measures are all part of information confidentiality and security. HIPAA guarantees that only the providers who need access to a patient's information are notified of changes from other pertinent providers, even when it makes care coordination more difficult.
