Cloud computing for businesses
Cloud computing is one of the technologies that that has come to provide a solution to
most businesses in terms of how they manage their storage and their hardware resources. The
‘cloud’ refers to the internet and operating ‘in the cloud’ means the way users store and access
their data through the internet. Business can access their data and information virtually creating a
flexible way of accessing data any place and any time (
Truong, 2010)
. Cloud computing
technology has recently been adopted by many businesses due to the trust that people have had
with it and the good reviews from the businesses that adopted it before
Businesses should consider subscribing to cloud computing since it will enable them to
be more agile, connected and resilient. Businesses will overcome the limitations of the physical
office and empower their employees so that they can still work from any other place including
their home. This will create flexibility in the businesses and can help businesses save a lot of
money since they will not need a large space for their work. Those dusty racks and servers that
are used to store data and information in the organization will never be needed after adopting
cloud computing. Employees will have information in their fingerprints and they would have the
flexibility to work from anywhere. This was a great advantage to many small and medium
businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic since employees could operate remotely and still
were productive.
Small businesses can have an advantage by investing on cloud computing since it
requires low initial investment hence providing small businesses with more flexibility, cash flow
and liquidity (
Gupta, Seetharaman & Raj, 2013)
. Small businesses do not have to pay for any
service or software that they do not need in their operations hence helping them avoid any

unnecessary costs. Businesses can also promote business continuity by ensuring that in case of
disaster or crises, they would not lose any data and their business would still continue.
Cloud computing is known to be very secure which means that businesses will not worry
about the privacy or loss of their information. Availability, confidentiality and integrity of their
data would be guaranteed. The servers at which data are stored are located at warehouses where
most workers are not allowed to access. Also the data stored in the servers is encrypted which
means that even after accessing the data, any intruder cannot make any sense of the data. Human
element can lead to compromise of the stored data but with encryption, gaining access to the data
would not help any malicious person.
