Executive Summary
Social networking technology has currently emerged as a sought-after technological
solution allowing users or organisations in communicating, connecting as well as share
information as well as relationships. This is in demand as businesses are allowing creativity
and its combination with social media in reaching to customers and organisations could use
social media as a means of marketing as well as reaching out to students for boosting their
access to knowledge and reaching out to various generations through the correct platform.
Swinburne University attempts to use social networking technology for amalgamating student
learning with technological advancement. The living laboratory provided by the Swinburne
Technology and Learning Innovation Centre (TLIC) would implement innovative technology
approaches, trying to establish a competitive advantage considering campus experience, as
well as student learning and this, would help in the advancement in the development of the
Swinburne TLIC centre. The group project would entail an introduction to social networking
technology and its implementation, consider the problem statement, conduct research and
come up with a plausible solution to the issue considering the scope, delivery options,
benefits of the solution provided.

Introduction
The role of social networking technology is vast as compared to conventional
methods in student learning. According to Ansari and Khan, social media and social
networking sites would facilitate collaborative learning as technology if followed with due
attention would lead to student productivity. As recorded ins surveys, university students
prefer adopting social media communication for interaction with teachers, peers, colleagues
utilising it as a source of resource transfer. This statement is further backed by Willbold
(2019) who affirms that both social media, as well as technology, have become an integral
part of lives and these online tools used by students would cater to various requirements in
group discussion, speedy communication and keeping with the recent trends. According to
research studies backed by Sobiah (2022), the pandemic has intensified the need vor
technology as students have been struggling to communicate during COVID 19 and they
have claimed that the pandemic has affected their student engagement, impeding their student
performance and would require novel methods of pedagogy for analysing the theoretical
benefits of remote learning and considering their advantages over old methods. The TLIC
community claims to solve these issues by connecting students with social networking
technology and establishing a competitive advantage on the campus enhancing students
learning and this would advance the development of the Swinburne Teaching centre.
Problem Statement The Australian education sector has been facing various obstacles in the education
sector post the pandemic. Unstable political conditions in Australia have led to sudden
funding shortages due to the challenge of all funds to the health sector for the pandemic. This
spending freeze has led to incomplete education facilities to a substantial increase in the
number of students from rural, poor, indigenous as well as disabled backgrounds. This along
with high staff turnover post-pandemic has worsened the conditions for a healthy learning
environment for the students. Thus, they have limited access to the internet, less staff to help
them with crucial information, and overpopulated library facilities. Innovation and critical
thinking have also suffered due to budget tightening as students have ideas but not enough
resources to put forward them and reach out to people. Due to unsolved queries, students
suffer from a lack of motivation, get distracted by other available options like sport and
unacademic parts, or even do not find enough energy in conducting group discussions due to
issues in communication. Interpersonal communication and diversity or inclusion among
foreign students make the situation worse. Hence, if there is social media technology installed
in the campus, all students would be accessible to any information shared despite their
location or inabilities to attend the campus. They would easily create student forums where
they can put forward their queries to teachers and post them according to their convenience
allowing flexibility, and nourishment of innovative ideas, thus enhancing learning and mental
stability. Apart from that, there are many students that face issues related to learning as many
universities are facing problem providing seamless experience of learning. So, in this
scenario, the Swinburne University stood up and recognised the requirements to solve such
challenges. They have approached for smart campus technology with the help of social
networking technology so the students can get better experience of learning all the time. In
this part, the task of the social networking technology will be to enhance the collaboration
and connectivity among the faculty members and students.
On the other hand, it can be said that the social networking technology provides an
opportunity to establish a virtual group or community where all the students can talk to each
other regarding their studies, perform online projects and share their knowledge. Swinburne
University is doing a great job by integrating the technology of social networking into the
smart campus so the students can have vast learning experience and also it can be
personalised as per the students. It will also help the students to develop and enhance their
soft skills so they can use them properly in their workplace.
Solution statement
Social media networking would be incorporated in the following ways
A social platform like a Facebook page would be created for conveying last-minute
changes in schedules or emergency information broadcasting the latest updates in
every department and alerts. This would also include assignment deadlines.
Twitter and Instagram would be used as a message board or discussion board to
discuss and the class representatives of every department would handle the classes.
There would be limited character incorporation which would allow students to think
critically and comment on any post.
YouTube channels would be made for posting all classes in locked channels and
restricted viewers for catching up on the notes and information. Speaker notes would
be provided on every video to understand the concepts and note down any part which
has been not understood. Students would be encouraged to post their presentations
which could be editable by the group members.
An online library would be created with all books available online with their editions
and copies being shown in the catalogue. This would save the university the cost of
dozens of staff in handling the library. All books would be password restricted for the
university students and handled by chatbots and AI which would help in finding the
exact subject.
Blogs are the best platform for idea sharing and working on them. So a blog space
would be provided for students who are shy or introvert and feel uncomfortable
interacting or sharing ideas with everyone. The best idea would be awarded by the
teacher for motivation.
On the other hand, another technology can be introduced to solve such problem and the
technology that can be approached is making a platform that will be specially created and
designed for Swinburne University. This technology will help the students to get better
learning experience as it will be integrated by existing digital infrastructure. There are various
features that this platform will provide and those are explained below.
With the help of this technology the students can have their own personalised profile
and this will provide them the opportunity to showcasing their personal interest and
academic status.
Apart from that, this technology will provide the students a collaborative learning
space where they can interact with each other and share their knowledge and project
plans
This platform will also help the students to know about all the activities of the
university and upcoming events. This will also help the students to stay connected
with the university campus for more details.
The most important and effective solution that this platform will provide is that all the
students can easily communicate with the industry professional. This will help them
to get more exposure regarding the job and the required skills to perform the job.
Also, this will showcase all the job opportunities to the students and students can also
apply for the job and prepare for it.
Solution Benefits
The incorporation of social media networking will have added advantages in
the learning process of the students. Social media pages would put students through a
learning curve while dealing with the traditional online dashboard in class and stick to
conventional pedagogy using a virtual interaction platform. Writing blog posts will

provide them another outlet for digital content. All pages would be made public
increasing accessibility to the university campus. These links in social media would
help the university professor receive more information about the students which
would provide a personalized regime for their improvement. Students would also gain
while connecting with learning groups as well as an educational establishment, talking
over doubts and discussing questions through various social media channels. The use
of these channels’ students could showcase their skills and which would enhance their
self-expression this would also allow students in conveying their views and opinion
through articles, photographs, videos and this would overall help in improving student
performance by solving assignments and gathering data with primary and secondary
research. On the other hand, integrating the social networking technology into the smart campus have
various benefits and these benefits will also help the students in their professional and
personal lives. Those other benefits have been mentioned below.
This platform will increase the engagement of the students within the university
learning environment and also this will help the students to share their knowledge and
projects with the other students and faculty members.
Apart from that, this platform will also provide the best experience of the events and
activities as a centralised hub. With the help of this platform the students can enhance
their experience of campus and stay connected with the university community.
On the other hand, this platform will also facilitate the proper collaboration and
communication among the students and faculties. The faculty members can also
implement innovative teaching techniques for the students.
With the help of this platform, the students can become more efficient and effective in
their learning as this can share proper learning data and resources to the them. Also,
this platform can share various important data such as learning models and situation
awareness data to the students so they can be up to date all the time.
The most important thing that this platform will provide to the university is greater
reputation. This will make this university a leader in such learning innovation and also
this will help the university to attract top students.
Solution Scope
The Smart Campus initiative would be addressing the following target groups
International students who have difficulty in understanding the various procedures
and ways of writing articles or conducting research
Students coming from indigenous communities, and rural backgrounds who want to
save finances in commutation
Students of all departments, with teachers, heads of departments, and tertiary
education providers
Students enrolled with a 6-month course or diploma would be accessible to the Smart
Campus, and undergraduates, postgraduate, doctorates, post-doctorate, diploma-
enrolled students, nursing, and medical faculty would be accessible to this program.
All should have a valid ID card to avail of this opportunity
On the other hand, there are many other solutions scopes are found in this situation and all of
them are very much significant for this scenario. Those scopes are mentioned below:
This platform will provide a better and effective learning environment for the students
and with the help of this the students can share their knowledge with other students.
This will also provide better experience of events and activities of the campus for the
students so they can be stay connected with the university community.
With the help of this platform, the students can get a better opportunity to improve
their career and also this will help the students to get best mentorship and vast
resource network for their betterment.
The most significant feature of this platform is that it can be accessed through various
unified gateway. This can also be used through multiple networks like WLAN,
Internet and IoT.
The main scope of this solution is to provide a better and advanced platform of social
networking for the students of the campus and it will also help the university to
engage students more effectively.
Solution risks Apart from the advantages of using social media and incorporating in education social
media comes with its own range of disadvantages. Some of the risks involved in the
introduction of social media networking are as follows
Cyberbullying- Cyberbullying is the usage of hackers in the internet or imposters
bullying people so that they feel upset. Almost 44% of Australian young people have
reported having a negative online experience over the past 6 months including
students who have received threats or abuse online (Australian government, 2017).
All this can also involve hurtful messages, or sending embarrassing photos to bully or
harass students. So this is a major security threat in university discussion forums or
any social media platforms.
Invasion of privacy- Sometime compromission of sensitive content present on social
media handles like the marks of students or gender identity can get hacked and get
targeted for hateful comments leading to cyberbullying. This falls under the Privacy
Act 1988 to prevent and manage such issues (OAIC, Australian government, 2023).
Identity theft- This occurs when a cybercriminal would gain access to all personal or
sensitive information, creates fake identity documents in the name, receive loans or
benefits applying for real identity documents in another name using other photographs
putting the student’s identity at risk of posing as a major threat in social media (Australian Cyber Security Centre 2020, May 18).
Offensive messages- social media often leads to the growth of a culture inclusive of
abusive language or offensive meaning which might hurt the sentiment of any
religious group or any other minor group like the indigenous communities. Thus this
might affect the morality of the students and also barr them vrom participating in any
activities.
Apart from these ones, there are some other solution risks are present in this situation and
those are explained below.
The main and significant risk is regarding data security and privacy. So, in the social
networking technology, sharing the personal information is very common and most of
the people do such activities to create their profile. This sharing of information can
increase the risk of data breaching and the result of this can become cyberattack. The
university should take proper measure to mitigate such risk for the students.
Another important aspect related to a risk is the usage of the technology. The actual
goal to use this platform can be hampered if the students find that this platform is not
that much useful and the engagement is also less. So, in this situation, the university
must include some stakeholders to maintain the need and design of the platform so the
expectations of the students can be met.
One of the most important risks that can arise in this situation is the implementation
cost of this technology. The university must be assured that the cost should be within
budget and reasonable.

Delivery options
The number of social media platforms have been increasing and considering the
number of risks posed by students in dealing with sensitive content on social media
networking platforms in an academic background. The university would prefer using in house
management of the website. The benefits would be that the company would receive a
question, posts the answers to the social media and understand how the question would be
answered. The university would also gain in retaining a higher control over the operation by
surveillance of their in-house by which they would exercise through outsourcing the roles to a
third-party organisation.
Implementation Methodology
The whole smart campus would be initiated through an online media platform only
for the students and professors of Swinburne university which would also be connected
through an application. It would be implemented through Agile marketing which is actually a
tactical marketing approach which would use the data as well as analytics for the solution for
the problems as well as opportunities which would involve employing the tests, evaluating
the results along with fast iterations. This collaboration through Agile marketing would focus
on the customers, and the students here over any hierarchy and respond to be flexible than

Conclusion
From the following paragraphs, it could be understood that the University has come
up with a plan for the Smart Campus introducing the concept of online marketing technology
into the learning platform through the formation of a common part for the students to create
pages in every known social platform like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube. There are some
issues considering the internet issues, problems with hacking difficulties, unnecessary
network glitches or compromission of personal data or issues with identity theft. These issues
if managed would be fit to be implemented through in-house management as it would avoid
the hassles with a third party and their considerations. In the future, app development is a
future consideration.
Recommendation
For improvements in the online platforms made for university students, privacy
settings are of primary importance so that any sensitive or vital information is not
compromised. This would also involve providing information online with prior knowledge of
the cons of doing so and keeping all sensitive information personal to prevent any harassment
in the future. Monitoring the website is also important and would lead to safeguarding all
sensitive information.
