EPL provides access to Canadian Citizenship Practice Exams from the Learning Express Library database, and during your study group you help patrons access this using the library’s computers. However, you want to find an authoritative government publication to help your study group prepare for the test at home, and since many of your participants don’t have internet access or a computer at home, you would like to provide a printout of a PDF for them to take home. C. Legal Information (5 marks) Use Canlii or Lawsource, or Edmonton Bylaws for the following questions. For legislation citations, including the section, subsection, clause, etc. of exactly where in the legislation you located the answer - basically just copy the neutral citation from the database. There are some differences in how to cite a bylaw – in that case, only list the bylaw number and section with the link (no “proper” citation required). A neutral case citation for cases should look like this example: Rozenhart v. Skier’s Sport Shop (Edmonton) Ltd., 2002 ABQB 509 1. After Baby Lap Time, two parents are discussing whether or not it is legal to spank your child in Canada. They ask you to find the legal answer. You discover: (describe your search strategy, your answer, a link to appropriate legislation, and any related citations that will help to support your answer). 4. You are a library technician in a public legal resource center. A client is suing a local grocery store because she suffered a concussion when she slipped on some ice while entering the store. You want to find a similar case from Alberta that happened within the past 10 years. You know this has something to do with the Occupier’s Liability Act. Provide your search strategy, a neutral citation for and valid link to the similar case, plus citation of the Act and copy a relevant section within the Occupier’s Liability Act.
5. Use the Canadian Encyclopedia Digest (CED) for a & b, and the Canadian Abridgement (CA) for c & d, both available from LawSource. a. Using the CED, provide a citation to the volumen/chapter/section that includes the heading Public Library Boards. (for example: CED Labour IV.2.(b).(i) (Western)) b. Using the CED, what province does not follow the other western provinces and Ontario regarding the control and corporate status of public library boards? c. Using the CA, find a case from 2022 where the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation caused a grievance between the public library board and the local labour union. What is the Canadian Abridgement ‘breadcrumb’ trail to find the case? (for example: Education Law -> Regulation of Education -> Constitutional issues -> General Principles EDU I.1.a) d.
