Unit 3 Assignment April Bashford COR 204 Community-Based Corrections November 11, 2023
The two approaches are risk management and desistance approaches. Desistance has been researched to be the approach that encourages behavioral change. It has highlighted the social structures and their roles in behavioral change, along with the institutions and many other societal characteristics. The supervision and interventions and the relationship between the probationers and the probation officers had been helpful in the change of behaviors by the influential process that the desistance approach offers. Building a good rapport between the two are very beneficial and the probationer’s perception of the officer helps in effective practices and will eventually encourage change in the behaviors. When the probationer and the probation officer have a better relationship, the desistance opens with better criminal justice settings. The factors influencing the probationer’s to not offend again, the individual processes and influences from structural processes have been the most known factors. The things adding to this is usually opportunities available, the probationer’s scope for change, and social norms in socio-economic contexts. This can include labor markets, policies in the public, institutions of influence, and other elements that are not within the individual’s control. The desistance approach is always trying to help the probationer make positive changes in their life and make themselves more adoptable in a law abiding life and to be more successful in society. When the probation officers use this approach, they are wanting to build more supportive and positive relationship with their probationer. They are wanting to change the behavior and enable the criminology and the psychology and the policies of society and politics in order to help their probationer and to reduce their reoffending rates.
The other approach, the risk management, is to control and mange the risk that the probationer may put upon society. The probation officer try to monitor the behavior to help them enforce the regulations and rules. They have used this approach to evaluate the situations that may promote threats and potential risks. They use this to set the level of supervision and use electronic monitoring and also use home confinement to identify the needs and give these individuals the services and resources needed in order to make it back into society with supervision plans. These plans help the probationer in not reoffending and to help reduce the crime rates and to keep people in society safe. Using the risk management approach, helps in understanding how likely the probationer is to reoffend and to help change their behavior to not reoffend and lower their criminal rate. While the behavior cannot be predicted, if they put a plan in place, it can help to change the behavior and be more likely to change the criminal behavior.
