IE 312 Laboratory Report Format,
Instructions and Rubric
A substantial part of the required work in this course involves writing
short, individual reports on the work you have done in the laboratory.
Each report should summarize the work performed in lab as well as
analysis and interpretation of any additional lab data given to you in
support of the lab. Your laboratory report should demonstrate both your
understanding of the subject and your ability to communicate that
understanding to others. Your report grade will be based on your success
in both areas.
Each lab report will include a Report Body (text) that is limited to 2-
pages in length for in-person labs and 4-pages in length for online
lab/homework assignments.
In addition your report will include
additional figures, tables and references that are appropriate for the lab
report and are not restricted in length. All components of the report,
including figures and tables, are to be your individual contribution.
Do
not insert figures and tables copied by others.
General Instructions:
Submit your report as a single .pdf
Use a legible font; a font size of 11 and a spacing of 1.0
Number all pages
Do not use a separate title page.
Use a brief title block at the top of the
first page of the report that includes:
NAME:
Your name and lab section number
LAB:
Title of the experiment from the lab handout
DATE:
Date of the experiment (when you did it in the FAME lab)
the words IN-PERSON or ONLINE depending on whether you were
physically present in lab (attendance will be checked)

Purpose
Objectives clearly define
the specific areas to be
investigated and focus on
the most important
characteristics of the
investigation.
Objectives define the
areas to be
investigated but are
general and lack
detail.
Objective is irrelevant

focused.
Objectives contain a
few grammatical
errors and some
ancillary information.
Objectives contain
moderate or worse
grammatical errors
and ancillary
information.
Results (30 Points)
This section of the report shows what you found. Please include any
tables and graphs that were used for recording and the complete data for
them here. This section should also include any observations and
photographs that you have for the experiment.
Do not try and explain
the results here, this is all that you observed and recorded.
Note:
All data tables and graphs must be carefully thought out. In general, the
data tables used in your lab handouts must be reorganized for inclusion
in your lab reports.

Commentary
Text briefly introduces
all tables and graphs,
provides a summary of
each, and identifies all
important trends to the
reader. Text states
which data is being
ignored and provides
justification for doing so.
Text introduces some of
the tables and graphs
but ignores others.
Some important trends
are not identified. Some
relevant graphs have
been omitted.
In depth
analysis that belongs in
discussion is included.
Tables and graphs
are either omitted, not
introduced, or not
summarized and
trends are not
identified.

All tables and graphs
have relevant captions
that clearly explain the
content of the table or
graph. All captions are
in the appropriate
location.
Some tables and
graphs are missing
relevant captions.
Captions are not in the
appropriate location.
Captions are
irrelevant and not in
the proper place.
Discussion (40 Points; graded together with
conclusions)
In this section, the results are interpreted and you make your inferences.
Describe the why you think the data turned out like it did. Insert your
scientific opinion in this section. Any calculations and graphs based on
the results are to be displayed here.
Make sure you talk about the
questions from the end of each handout here.
When writing this
part, ask yourself the following questions. In what ways do my results
confirm, contradict, or modify my original expectations? In what ways are
the results limited? What further tests are needed? What reasons do I
have for trusting the results? What reasons are there for believing that
these relationships are significant? This is the section of your report that
separates the A's from the C's!
Conclusion/Summary (10 Points; graded together with
discussion)
This section is a summary of the results and discussion from the report.
Report only the key findings of the report here. Directly answer the
report objective(s) here. Do not be vague.

Discussion
of objectives
A clear explanation of how
the results achieved or did
not achieve the original
objectives is included that
utilizes specific examples of
the data collected (relevant
trends, graphs, etc) to
provide support.
Some explanations do not
include specific examples of
data to provide support for
claims that are made. Some
data is interpreted
incorrectly.
No explanation of
how the results
achieved or did not
achieve the original
objectives is
included. No
reference is made to
the data collected.
Discussion
of original
expectations
10-8
7-4
3-0
A clear explanation is
provided on how the
collected data confirm,
contradict, or modify the
original expectations before
completing the experiment.
Results are compared to a
previous investigation or
published theory and all
sources used are properly
cited.
Analysis of the collected data
omits important trends or
incorrectly interprets the
data. Results are not
compared to relevant
publications.
Analysis of results is
limited, omits
discussion of
important trends, is
not compared to
original expectations,
and is not compared
to relevant sources.

the "Partial list of items to
include in your report" is
provided in sufficient depth
using sources when
necessary.
Discussion of some items in
the "Partial list of items to

incorrectly taken into
account.
Discussion of some
items in the “Partial
list of items to
include in your
report” is missing
and a substantial
amount of these
items are incorrectly
taken into account.
Discussion
of error

Discussion of possible
sources of error is included
and suggested changes to
improve procedures are
fully justified.
Possible sources of error are
listed but not explained.
Justification for suggested
improvements has minor
flaws.
A substantial portion
of the error involved
in the experiment is
ignored or incorrectly
taken into account.
Presentation

Attachments
(10 pts)
Overall format and organization of attached references, figures
and tables :
The references indicate where you got information that was not your
own.
References should be numbered and the reference numbers should
be called out in your report body.
All figures and tables must be
numbered and called out in the body of your report.
Make sure that
