Section 2: Managing Tradeoffs in Production and Quality The goal of this section of the course is for you to consider the organizational and technological complexities associated with production and quality in industry. You will be presented two difference cases. The first focusses on production issues within a sink finishing operation. The second involves production and quality challenges associated with a package manufacturing facility. Summary of Assignments This section of the course requires you to complete 3 Discussion Board Threads and a 2-page memorandum (Section total = 100 points). Grading: Substantive Comment Points Discussion 1 10 Discussion 2 10 Discussion 3 10 Memorandum 70 Total 100 Discussion Thread

at 6:59 PM. To receive full credit, you should provide at least 1 substantive comment for each Discussion Thread, and I encourage you to participate more often. I also strongly encourage you to pay attention to these discussions since they may contain information that will assist you on your written assignment.
Section 3: Sink USA Discussion Thread 1 After watching the videos, what additional questions do you have about Sink USA, the operation and the workers to help you understand how to address the challenges associated with the operation? Section 3: Sink USA Discussion Thread 2 Based on what you know about Sink USA’s operation so far, what do you suspect might be the important contributing factors to the operation’s poor productivity and low profitability?
Section 3: Sink USA Discussion Thread 3 Based on what you have learned from the videos and previous discussion threads, what would you do to identify the ergonomics challenges and/or other issues that are impacting the operation? Memo - Bayonne Packaging, Inc. (70 points) due Wednesday, July 28
th
at 6:59 PM. This is a Harvard Business School case that covers an operational assessment of a customized package manufacturing facility called Bayonne Packaging, Inc. that specializes in innovative and difficult package designs. For this case, you will be required review the written case materials, and write 2-page memorandum about the case. You can work individually or in teams of 2 to characterize the operation’s problems, and develop solutions to enhance production and quality at the facility. Your work will include an analysis of opportunity to analyze income, order schedules, material flow and production data that are provided with the case. Please include the role of the team members in your memorandum. You will write a concise 2-page report to the President Rand of Bayonne Packaging, Inc. that 1) summarizes B
ayonne’s quality
, cost and production problems with supporting evidence, 2) identifies the root causes and contributing factors
to the problems, and 3) lists and prioritizes (
with supporting evidence)
short- and long-term recommendations to address the problems. You should attach appendices that support your conclusions. I suggest an approach to developing the supporting evidence that could include, for example: 1.
Evaluating current capacity utilization in the work centers (excluding Finishing where capacity is variable) when none of the orders can be ganged, when pairs can be ganged and when all orders can be ganged. You can of course make simplifying assumptions about the number of pieces per order, available production time in the workday. I suggest assuming that set up time takes 2.5 hours. 2.
Evaluating the impacts of partial orders that result in 2 set ups versus one for each run. For example, how do the partial orders impact production capacity at the Royal/Queen work center. 3.
Considering the yield at each of the Sheet, Print, Die-cut and Royal/Queen work centers. For example, what would the total yield would be for an order that starts with, for example, 40,000 sheets. 4.
Considering what size orders should be routed to the Royal/Queen verses the Staude work centers. 5.
Considering the organization of the operation and the communication patterns, and how could these be improved throughout the processes.
