REQUIREMENTS ENGINEERING Homework 04 | ISIT 470 Systems Analysis & Design SFCC Winter 2024 | Sean Lickfold
WELCOME TO HOMEWORK 04! Before starting this Assignment, make sure to read all the required materials for this module, which can be found in the corresponding module Discussion. Chapter 4 is the first of the four chapters in the systems analysis phase. This chapter describes the requirements engineering process: gathering facts about a systems project, creating models that will be used to design and develop the system, and verifying and validating that the models are correct before proceeding to the next phase of the SDLC. The chapter includes three “Case in Point” discussion questions to help contextualize the concepts described in the text. The “Question of Ethics” raises the issue of considering a request by a supervisor to identify departments that reported the lowest ratings in a survey that was supposed to be kept anonymous.

QUESTIONS #1-4 You are the IT manager at a regional moving company that recently merged with a major competitor. The company president asked you to prepare requirements for a new information system to support the combined company.
QUESTION #1 Should employees be involved in developing the new system? If so, what should be their role? Of course they should! They would help give input and insight to how their systems worked, and use their knowledge on it to make sure the new system met their needs.
QUESTION #2 What types of system requirements will you focus on? Explain each one in detail. System requirements should focus on Security , because companies are quite vulnerable when they merge, Usability because we’re going to be bringing together two separate companies with two separate ways of working (so we need to focus on being useable), and Function, Performance, and Integration Aspects for the same reasons as Usability.

QUESTION #3 You decide to conduct a series of JAD sessions. Prepare a memo to participants, and include a detailed plan. “Hello All, We’re going to be holding a series of sessions to work together on the development of our new company system. The meeting will begin at 10:30am on Tuesday, and we will meet weekly afterward for the next month. These sessions aim to use your expertise in your former company’s systems to help guide the development of the new system, so that it’s functional and works well for the users. When we get together, I’ll introduce you to our development team, they’ll go over what we are working with, and then we will open the session to everyone so we can discuss our requirements. I’ve sent this out on Wednesday because I want to give you all time to think of ideas before we begin sessions next week.”
QUESTION #4 What fact-finding methods could you use to collect information from employees at Colonial Movers? Suggest at least three methods, and explain the pros and cons of each. Fact-finding methods I could use would be Surveys (Pros: easy to distribute, simple, succinct answers; Cons: Easy to ignore, limited responses), Observations (Pros: Easy to do, no need to avoid lingo/terminology; Cons: suspicious if people don’t know/recognize you, looking over people’s shoulders), and interviews (Pros: Individualized answers, more in-depth understanding of user-side; Cons: Time consuming).

QUESTIONS #5-8 Zevo is currently reaching the end of the requirements modeling phase of a new inventory control system for their global company. As a systems analyst, you are asked to support this ongoing project.
QUESTION #5 How would you explain scalability? How would you ensure that scalability has been considered in Zevo’s requirements model? Scalability is the ability your system has to grow and provide higher services when there is larger demand. In order to ensure scalability has been considered, I would look at the engineers that are working on these systems, and how/if the systems are open to either vertical or horizontal scaling if the need arises.
QUESTION #6 How would you define total cost of ownership (TCO)? What costs should be included in a TCO estimate? A TCO is the initial (purchase) cost of an asset to a system, plus the cost of its operation until it’s end-of-life. Costs such as repair, maintenance, potential insurance, and any training needed should be included in a TCO estimate.

QUESTION #7 Explain why documentation is essential for Zevo’s new system, and how documentation can be used during systems development. as the software grows and becomes more sophisticated, it’s going to be almost impossible to remember all the pages, screens, settings, parameters, restrictions, and especially the business logic of every functionality. Documentation can be used during development as references, a jumping-off point, or as simple reminders of basic concepts that had been forgotten over time.
QUESTION #8 What software tools could you use to develop, publish, and distribute Zevo’s systems documentation? A few simple things we could use would be CASE Tools (as they could be used at every stage of development), Productivity software (Like the Microsoft Office Suite, which can include word processing, spreadsheet, database management, presentation graphics, and collaboration software programs), or Graphic Modeling Software (that could create a large array of charts and diagrams)
