SNHU 107 Project Academic Success Plan Use this template to address the steps in your Project Guidelines and Rubric. Complete all parts of this template by replacing the bracketed text with your responses. Be sure to proofread the entire document before submitting. Name: Sherell Quimbley 1. Identify a problem-solving technique or method you have used in a previous situation and explain how it helped you. How might problem-solving methods be different in diverse cultures or fields of work? How can effective problem-solving help you in your academic journey? My favorite problem-solving method is the 5 Why method. It’s where you clearly state what the problem is. You then ask why this happened. Once you ask the 1 st why you will continue to question the answer to the why with, why until you get down to the root cause of the situation. Som people cause call this method “Root Cause Analysis.” I think this method of problem solving can be effective in any diverse fields of work because regardless of what the problem is, it will help you get down to the bottom of a problem to begin to address how to resolve it. I’ve always been a planner. My leading PI traits are DC (dominant and analytical). I love a good to do list that I can compile and check off as I complete task. I like to place all my weekly tasks on a calendar and create bullet point steps to get things completed. Continuing to have this same approach with my studies will help me stay organized and prioritize my time well. 2. Identify your learning style and explain how knowing/learning about your learning style helped support your success throughout this course. Below are my two preferred learning styles: Auditory/verbal learning style Tactile/kinesthetic learning style I have always been a hands-on learner. I would say that tactile/kinesthetic learning style would be my leading learning style; but I also do well with listening to instructions or an explanation of a task and then giving it a try. I love that SNHU has a function in almost all our resources that allows you to have the system read aloud. I feel this is really going to help me be successful because I can maximize my time when it comes to my study and reading time. This is more beneficial than ever when it comes to getting my chapters read. I’ve found myself listening to my books when I am in the car or in my office working. I can also rewind and listen to a specific are multiple times if I feel I missed the understanding. Being told or being explained something is one thing but when I am allowed to get hands am I’m most successful. Understanding this about myself will help me be successful inside and out of the classroom because I am able to tap right into an activity and get an understanding sooner. 3. Identify which of the five successful habits of an SNHU student have been most helpful for you throughout this course. Explain how those habits have helped you. The most helpful of the five successful habits of an SNHU student has been most helpful for me throughout this term has been Log In Often. This has made a world of difference. There have been weeks where I’m logging in often and staying ahead of my work and weeks where I have fallen behind and not been able to spend as much time with my work. Although I am getting things submitted on time the quality of my work is better when I log in often and early and have more time think over my responses to each of the modules. This course has been extremely teaching when it comes to using my resources. 4. Explain how you will stay on track in your courses and overcome interruptions that may impact your schedule.
To manage my new task (school) with the already time-consuming responsibilities I have, I think it would be better to eliminate some of these distractions rather than plan time for them. I plan to do this by, removing the tv out of my home office so that I am not tempted to turn it on when working, turn my phone on silent or do not disturb when working, and making sure that I am spending my working time in my office so that am away from all unnecessary distractions and in my creative working space. 5. Choose two SNHU resources (departments and resources that are part of SNHU) and two social supports (people, places, and things outside of SNHU) that will help the most with achieving your mission and goals, and that will help you prioritize your time. Also indicate why these resources and social support are key for your success. List your personal academic mission statement. I am currently working towards my BS in Human Resource Management. I chose this degree plan because I have already worked the past 7 years as HR personnel and currently work as an HR Manager. I love my career and what I do, so now that I’ve built a few years of experience I want to add the degree to go along with it. My plan is to graduate with a Summa Cum Laude honor. Once I’ve obtained my degree I want to aim for a corporate role within my company. I ultimately desire a career that will allow me to travel and work remotely. Although career advancement plays a huge role in me deciding on my program, another huge factor in me pursuing my degree is I want to be a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Inc. sorority. I know that my experience coupled with degree will open these doors. Obtaining my degree will allow me and my family to have a happier quality of life. It will allow me to spend more time at home with my daughter, take more family trips and invest more time into my business. Although I eventually plan to branch off from corporate America and solely function as an entrepreneur, I know this will also help me develop more as a business owner and become more knowledgeable surrounding business functions. Obtaining my degree has always been a goal of mine. Even though I’m starting late in the game, I know it’s never too late for me to set an example for my daughter and to show her it’s never too late to chase your dreams. 7. List your THREE short-term academic goals. Goal #1: Maintain a B+/A average. i. How/Why? Just simply graduating is not enough. I want to graduate with high honors (Summa Cum Laude). I would also like to become a member and scholarship recipient of Delta Mu Delta. In order to obtain this, I have to stay consistent with my GPA across my entire program. I must ensure I am investing the proper time into my work. I do this by making sure I am staying active in my work, log in as early and often as possible, and stay committed to the schedule I have set out. Goal #2: Get a general understanding of the requirements to pledge Delta Sigma Theta Inc. and the Delta Mu Delta Scholarship.
i. How/Why? Although I understand that I must maintain a certain GPA and academic standing to obtain either of these, I do need to go ahead and get a full understanding of what the requirements and process are to obtain both goals. This will allow me to set more short-term goals and action items to keep me clear on focused on the big picture. Doing this earlier in my program will give me greater chance at success in obtaining them. It’s better to be ahead than having to back track and catch up. Goal #3: Become more organized. i. How/Why? Although I have a schedule for when I will spend time completing work and do my best to stick to it, I think having a more detailed guide will make these sessions more productive. Having a guide as to how I will complete my work and what class assignments I will work on during this session and how much time I will spend on each one will be very important. It will keep me more focused and on track. I know some classes will be more challenging than others, and naturally I like to complete easier task 1 st . Having this detailed schedule will keep a balance across all classes to ensure that I do not allow things to pile up and must cram more work on myself than needed. 8. Describe the importance of setting goals on your academic journey. Setting goals is key to long term success. It’s vital to my success that I plan for success. Identifying what barriers I face, eliminating distractions and interruptions, and laying out a schedule for my studies is going to be the only way I can be successful long term. Setting goals allows you to stay focused and on track when it comes to a larger goal. I’ve also found having a guideline to follow makes it easier to be successful than “just winging it.” When you must make a list or check list that outlines what the expectation is makes it easy to stay on track. You know what needs to be taken in small doses and what needs to be consumed all at once. However, you look at it the old saying stands true, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” 9. Explain how you are going to stay motivated to achieve your goals and mission statement, based on what you have learned in SNHU 107. I’m already motivated based on my personal goals, but this course has made me aware of the SNHU network that is here for me and able to assist me along my journey. This first term has been a challenge when it comes to getting a balance between my personal and work life, but I know this is just the beginning. I am sure that to some students being a full-time online student can feel like you’re on an island alone but all the support and resources that SNHU offers, provides a blanket for students. I know that I can be successful within my program. It’s up to me. 10. Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to giving and receiving feedback when collaborating with others. When giving and receiving feedback from diverse groups of people I think there are a few strategies that would be the most helpful. Understanding the other person’s culture is most important. This will help me manage some of my verbal/non-verbal cues. Having the knowledge of how different cultures greet each other, what types of gestures are perceived as positive and negative, knowing what type of language and tone is appropriate will all help me when interacting with these diverse groups of people. Diversity awareness is a major factor in effective communication, but most importantly when giving and receiving feedback. Being able to understand a person's cultural and social background will help you better understand how and why a person communicates the way they do. You can better understand their vernacular, tone, choice of words, and overall outlook. The lack of emotional intelligence and failure to understand these factors could result in offensive language, lack of understanding and a complete misunderstanding.

11. Explain why it is important to take ownership, be vulnerable, ask for help, and have an open mind to achieve your goals. I’ve learned my strength comes through vulnerability and being open minded to hear and understand other viewpoints. My parents have always told me a smart person learns from their mistakes, but a wise person learns from the mistakes of others. Being open allows me to receive critical feedback and knowledge that may be the key to being successful at a certain task. It’s the sharing of knowledge and receiving information that can propel me forward. Throughout my program there are going to be times where I am going to have to be vulnerable and ask for help, reach out to my support factors, and ask for help where needed. 12. Explain what your biggest takeaway was from this course. My biggest takeaway from this course is to stay committed to my goals. This course has made me think about what my purpose in starting this program is and what I plan on gaining once my program is complete. I know how it is to get caught up in daily work and life changes so that we can push our goals to the side, but I know that SNHU has my back and wants me to be successful. I know this because SNHU provides a wide range of tools and resources available at my fingertip. 24/7 resources, direct access to professors, peer tutoring, even being able to submit some assignments via video is amazing. Since being on this course I have create a visual representation of some goals that I have, professionally, personally, and educational. I plan on taking every opportunity I can to be successful as an SNHU student and I know completing my program is 100% achievable with the accessible resources provided.
