Imagine you are a professional biologist who has been tasked to gather the following
requested data for an environmental consulting company. When you are writing this up,
we’re expecting a professional sounding and looking document.
[1]
Perform 3, ten-minute Point Counts
[24 marks] using the instructions outlined in
your manual as well as the resources found on Courselink (see “Ontario Bird Breeding
Atlas”). You can complete this exercise at any time or any location, but we recommend
conducting them at the same time/location that you gather observations for your field
notebooks.
You do not need to identify birds to species if you are not confident in your identifications,
but you must try to distinguish between species (e.g., Species A, Species B, etc.) and to
count individuals of the same species. Try to include notes separate from your Point
Count data sheet to help you with making your identifications (e.g., characteristics of their
songs/sounds, body shape, colour, etc.).
*Please note: This write-up needs to be completed on an individual basis.
The parts you hand in for this question need to include:
a) The completed Point Count Data sheet (see Courselink for data sheet) [2 marks
each Point Count]
b) A point count diagram of the location for each Point Count (including compass
indicating North and any major geographical landmarks; see Courselink for
diagram instructions) [2 marks each Point Count]
c) A written summary of your findings for each point count. What was the most
common species you saw/heard? How did you distinguish between species
[i.e., descriptions of songs/calls, body characteristics]? Were any interesting
behaviours noted during each Point Count? [4 marks each Point Count]
[2] Reflect on your experience by a
nswering the following question
[4 marks]
a) Point Count data are frequently used in both citizen science and research
projects. Using your own knowledge, the experience you gained completing this
assessment, and the literature (if desired), discuss two advantages and two
disadvantages of Point Count data.
