1 Conducting a Needs Analysis MSCIN Program, Western Governors University D183: Designing Curriculum and Instruction I (OIM2) Kelly Winkelhake October 24, 2023
2 State or National Standard: I taught the unit to a rural school district's second-grade class. There were nineteen students, nine girls and ten boys. The Pennsylvania academic standard used is: CC.2.4.2.A.3 Solve problems and make change using coins and paper currency with appropriate symbols. Unpacking the Standard: 1. What students should know: Students should know the value of the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar, dollar, and five-dollar bills. 2. What students should understand: Students should understand how to add coins to get a total amount. 3. What students should be able to do after completing the unit of study: Students should be able to determine the proper amount of money used to purchase certain priced items after completing the unit of study. They should also know how much money they should receive in return if the amount is different than the cost. Evaluation Instrument: 1. The instrument I used to evaluate students’ prior knowledge and skills aligned with the standard, CC.2.4.2.A.3, was a pre-assessment listed below. Students were to select the coins that displayed the correct change when buying a snack. A student uses $1.00 to buy a snack that costs 85¢. Show the correct amount of change the student should get back. Use the symbols below for coins.
3 Analyze the Data: 1. Description of the Gap: a. The results of the analysis displayed proficiency in fifteen of the students. These students presented correct answers to the problem. Of the remaining four students, three of the students wrote two more quarters to the answer and then selected three quarters and a dime for an incorrect answer of eighty-five cents. The final student colored the circles the same color as the coins instead of selecting the correct change. 2. Content or Skills Needed: a. To close the gap for all students to solve problems and make change using coins and paper currency with appropriate symbols, I provided supplemental instruction and enrichment activities. I reviewed counting coins and making change in small group instruction with the four students who did not answer correctly. Once these students showed competence in making change, they joined the other students. The proficient students were paired with another student and participated in shopping in the classroom store where each pair was given a bag with play money inside. Each bag contained a dollar bill and a random number of coins. One student (the customer) “bought” items from the school store and the other (the cashier) totaled the items and made change with the money provided by the customer.
