Homework 3. Wind Turbine Site Test
Category:
Individual submission
Submission type:
Submit the electronic copy (.pdf) and data files on blackboard.
Submission due:
By end of day, Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
Assignment:
1. The hourly wind speeds of a site located in the U.S. southwest are given for a period of three
years (2009, 2010 and 2011) in the file Wind Data 2009_2011.xlsx
2. Consider a Vestas, V100-2.0 MW
™
wind turbine model with the following specifications:
➢
Rated Power 2,000 kW
➢
Cut-in wind speed 4m/s
➢
Cut-out wind speed 22m/s
➢
Rated wind speed 15m/s
a)
Using the power curve program that was developed in the previous assignment and the
given wind speeds, calculate the following:
1.
Hourly power output of the wind turbine for the full year, for each year. Create a
graph with the power output for each year.
2.
Total Energy Production for each year.
3.
The Capacity Factor for each year.
4.
Create a table that includes the Total Energy Production and the Capacity Factors
for each year.
5.
Calculate the probability and the cumulative distribution function of the wind
speeds from the provided data set.
6.
Create a table that includes the wind speeds, number of observations, probability
of the wind speed and the cumulative distribution function.
7.
Compare the results for each year and discuss the differences observed for each
year.
b)
Generate a typical day with 24 hours of every month of the year, for each year and
provide the following:
1.
Create a table that shows the values of the typical day of each month for each
year.
2.
Create a graph that contains the typical day of each month for each year.
3.
Analyze the typical days for each month and discuss the differences between
months and among years.
c)
Create a report that includes the program code, the power output graphs, typical day
monthly wind speed graphs, tables, and discussion of the results.
