DAT-300 Journal: Data Assessment Preparation
Nicholas Curtis
The first part of creating a data quality assessment is planning how the data will be used
in the organization. It’s important to understand how the data will help and to understand the
goals for the data from the organization. This is how it will be possible to determine if a data set
causes any organizational challenges. It’s also important to make sure the data set is useful by
analyzing how the organization used the data and making the data work. You can tell if the data
is usable by showing how it contributes to the organization’s goals. This will also help with
making sure all of the data is accurate for the data quality assessment. If the data is not accurate
it will be of no usefulness and will skew any problems the organization uses the data for. If the
data is accurate, then the outcomes will be met. Identifying data once again falls under the same
umbrella of completing the organizations goals with the data. While completing the data quality
assessment it will become clear what data will need to be kept, and what data can be discarded as
it does not serve the organization’s goals. Any data that does not contribute can be discarded. It is
important to do multiple assessments and to really make sure that the data will not be needed
before discarding it. The biggest obstacles that could interfere would be making sure the data is
compatible as well as making sure the data is complete. If the data is not compatible between the
two companies, then it will require a lot of work getting the systems to a good place where the
data is compatible. The second possible major hurdle is the data being complete in order to reach
the companies goals. It’s important that the data is able to be used correctly, and if the data is not
complete then it will not be able to be used. This could cause all kinds of issues within the
organization and would need to be watched over even after the merging of the data sets. In
general, most problems can be recognized and solved by understanding the goals of data sets by
the companies.
