Taiwan Taxi
1.Why do you think Comfort Taxi was able to attract 16,000 taxi drivers and to adopt the
GPS-dispatch system within two years, whereas Taiwan Taxi managed to recruit only 6,700
members over seven years?
In the Taiwanese cab industry, many drivers did not understand the importance of
the GPS system because they had been cab drivers for a relatively short period of time and
had not been trained in IT. As a result, many Taiwan Taxi drivers did not adopt iCall. In
addition, many drivers were confident in their own customer acquisition methods and did not
trust the new technology. This situation probably contributed to the low adoption of GPS
systems, unlike the comfortable taxi in Singapore. So, it was necessary for companies to
make an effort to promote the adoption of iCall. I will speculate, since the case study
materials did not include details about Comfort Taxi's efforts.
This specific effort could be done in the following ways. The first is to use data to
explain the data. We need to use concrete data to explain to the drivers how iCall uses the
Dispatch system to assign work to them, and how it has been successful in Singapore. It is
important that they understand the benefits and effectiveness of iCall through actual numbers
and case studies.
The next step is to lower the hurdle for drivers to adopt the system. By implementing
measures to lower the hurdle to adoption, such as discounting iCall membership fees for the
initial few months, many drivers may be more willing to adopt the system. The objective is to
have drivers experience the convenience of iCall during this period, leading to continued use.
Finally, education and training. Drivers need to be educated and trained on the use
and benefits of iCall so that they can take advantage of the system. Proper training will help
drivers embrace the new technology with confidence.
While these efforts may be costly to the company, in the long run, they may
ultimately benefit Taiwan Taxi through increased driver satisfaction and efficiency. The
failure to do these things may be the reason why iCall has not become more widely used by
Taiwan taxi.
