HW1
Out of 6 points (6% of Course Grade)
Due: Monday, February 13 by 11:59pm CST – Upload to Blackboard through Assessments
tab
Please see below for the formatting requirements of this assignment. The questions and the point totals start
on the next page.
Your assignment responses should be typed in Times New Roman, 10-12 size font, single or 1½ line
spaced, one-inch margins all around, and justified (both left and right/Ctrl+J). Page orientation can be
either “Portrait” or “Landscape” and can vary by page.
You may use no more than 6 pages total for your assignment (excluding references, and title page and
table of contents, if used). Please note the varying point totals of the questions and structure space
accordingly in your assignment.
You are allowed to use outside sources (references) to back up your points, if applicable. If outside
sources are used, they must be included in a reference list at the end of the assignment and also cited at
point of use in your assignment response. Also, if you take a direct quote from any source, including a
website or the course textbook, the quoted material must be placed in quotation marks and the source
must be cited at the point of use, e.g., Project management is “the planning, organizing, directing, and
controlling of company resources for a relatively short-term objective that has been established to
complete goals and objectives. Furthermore, project management utilizes the systems approach to
management by having functional personnel (the vertical hierarchy) assigned to a specific project (the
horizontal hierarchy) (Kerzner, 2017, p. 4).
You must type and/or use drawing or other software tools for all of your assignment responses – scans or
photos of handwritten answers are not
acceptable. The acceptable file formats are doc, docx, and (non-
scanned) pdf only.
Your file should be named "HW1_YourLastNameYourFirstName". For example, this would be
“HW1_CrossJennifer”.
Please remember to double-check your file before you submit it. If you submit the wrong file (or an
incorrectly formatted file) and want to submit a replacement file later, this will result in at minimum a late
grade adjustment (please see the syllabus for information on late grade adjustments) and could result in
the loss of all credit for the assignment (i.e., if you submit the replacement file outside the allowable late
period – again see the syllabus). The only exception to this would be if you notice this error and email us
the replacement file before 02/07/2022 11:59pm CST.
This assignment is an individual assignment, and all work in the assignment must be your own. Any
discussion with or copying of work from other students, or other outside source (without appropriate citation),
is an academic integrity violation. Following the policy in the syllabus, this will result in both reporting this
violation to the Office of Student Conduct and zero credit for the entire assignment (if this violation is
confirmed by the Office of Student Conduct). Additional academic action, such as failure in the course, could
result from particularly egregious violations.
Best of luck on this assignment and please let me know if you have any questions!

Homework #1
Spring 2023

1.
(2 points total, 70% content, 30% communication quality). Think of a “problem” (e.g., a
difficult or challenging circumstance, something that needs improvement, a dilemma, a
choice, etc.) that you, a friend, or a family member is facing:
a.
State the problem in writing as clearly and concisely as you can using the first version
(formulation) of the problem that comes to mind.
One of the current decision that I have to consider is about my Summer 2023 intership. I
have been applied for lots of companies across the states for couple of months now and
not only I received lots of rejection emails but also did some interviews with 5
companies. This week, I had been offered to join a company for the summer but I haven’t
decided yet since the distance is a little bit far from Texas. I wanted to wait for the rest of
the companies that I interviewed with because their company locations are in Texas so it
would be more convenient for me to relocate. However, I only had three days to response
to the offer letter so I had to decide quick whether to take it or not. b.
Now, restate the problem in two alternative ways. Hint: you may restate the original problem
in a more general – or more specific – way, or from a different viewpoint. However, your
restatements must be distinctly different from each other, and from the first version of the
problem (in part a), in some significant way. That is, it must not only be that different words
are used but that (at least subtly) different meanings are implied and/or different perspectives
incorporated. If you find this very difficult or impossible to do, select a different problem for
part a and start over. -From my parent’s perspective: they are not worry much because they they said if you
agree to take the offer, it will be a great way to test all the things you learn from school. If
I decide to not take it, it’s still be fine since I still have months before I graduate so from
their viewpoints, they do not see this situation the same way as I see it.
-From my friend’s perpective: they are encourage me to take the offer since the
opportunity may not come back so I have to take my chance and get it, otherwise, I may
regret in the future because of not taking the offer.
c.
Discuss: How do the three different versions of the problem impact the type(s) of solutions
you (or your friend or family member) might be mostly likely to identify?
From three different viewpoints, I don’t think it will impact much my solution since there
will be no one understand the current situation more than me, however, with there
different perpestives, it gives me more confident of whatever decisions that I make since I
know that I am be supported.
d.
Double-loop learning: What you did learn about problem-solving and/or systems
thinking from this exercise? Are there any changes you would recommend to the
structure or content of this exercise that you think you would have enhanced your
learning?
For problem-solving, looking at the problems with different viewpoints will always good
even though it may not come up with good solution every time, it still helps to provide a
better picture and understanding of the problem.
2.
(2 points total, 70% content, 30% communication quality). Think of an action that you, a friend, or a
family member is currently considering whether to take, either now or in the near future, which is
related to a creative idea or career-related decision, and which has at least some risk of negative
potential outcomes associated with it. (Note: if applicable, it is OK to use the problem from question
1 above).

a.
Write a short (one page or less) “catastrophic expectations report.” That is, describe in
as much detail as you can what would happen if “everything thing went wrong” (aka
Murphy’s law applies).
There is obviously no risks if I decide to take it. However, there will be a chain of
negative outcomes that can happen if I decide to decline the offer:
If deciding not to take the offer and the rest of the companies that I interviewed do
not offer me the positon, I will be unemployed during summer plus I do not have any
classes to take. Then, coming toward the Fall which is also my last semester, it will
be struggling for me to apply for a full-time job. Companies will look at my resume
and they may not choose me because they do not see any intern’s expreriences and
may doubt about my skills and knowledge. It leads to I can not find a related job to
my major after graduting so I have to work in non-related engineering position.
Since it is non-related job, I will only have one year to stay in the US instead of three
years. After one year, I have to come back home and start everything again. It will be
time and cost consuming and I may have culture shock since I already used to live in
the American cultute.
b.
Discuss: How did this make you feel about the action under consideration? How
would it affect your approach toward deciding whether to take the action or not? (For
the purposes of this part of the discussion, assume that you are the person taking the
action – or not – in the scenario).
With all the possible negative outcomes listed, it let me to have a closer look of what may
happen in certain directions instead of just thinking in my head. The decision in this
situation will absolutely affect my career path after graduting so I will decide to take the
offer.
d. Double-loop learning: What you did learn about problem-solving and/or systems
thinking from this exercise? Are there any changes you would recommend to the
structure or content of this exercise that you think you would have enhanced your
learning?
From this exercise, I learned that during a complexity situation, looking at a relationship
that one possible outcomes can lead to another can be more useful instead of spliting
down into parts.
3.
(2 points total, 70% content, 30% communication quality). Reflect on your international experience
and how it affected your perception of the engineering profession. a.
Discuss: Reflecting on part a, why, specifically, do you think your perceptions were
changed in this particular situation? What can this experience teach you about how
might you try to experience new cultures again in the future?
I would say my engineering perceptions were not changed in this situation but rather than
learning what is an engineer looks like, what is the processes of an engineer may do. All
of these has built up my perceptions from that time.
For me, if I have another the chance to experience new culture, I will not be hestitate to
experience it since exploring new culture, talking to people with different background,
learning from them are the things I really enjoy doing for all the time I study abroad. TTU IE 4320 Fundamentals of Systems

For this exercise, I would say I do not learn much about problem-solving since maybe
because I study abroad since high school, there were nothing much that affected my
perception of the engineering profession since I started to learn about it during my time
here.
