Week 1 Assignment: Organizing
Part A:
Chapter 1:
How effectively do you think Troi spent her day?
I think Troi spent her day as effective as she could. She was able to accomplish major tasks such
as speaking with colleagues to find solutions for problems, speaking with her team, being
available for team and taking a bit of time for herself. She was able to fill static time by checking
her Slack and Emails. There was a 30 minute break for yoga, which shouldn’t be held against her
because a break is needed. Taking 30 minutes to reground is much better than spending the
whole day doing tasks at the bare minimum. She also arrived 30 minutes early, so I think her
time was used well.
What does the case tell you about what it is like to be a project manager?
The case tells me that there are a lot of moving parts and problem solving with being a project
manager. There are numerous people to check in with on a day-to-day basis, such as her other
project managers, her team, and people from completely different departments. Communication
must be thorough and constant, so everyone can accomplish their tasks.
Chapter 2:
What is our major problem here?
The major problem is none of the product managers have a concrete common goal to strive for.
The project managers do not want to share resources and believe their project is above a different
on within the company, even though they all work for the same company. They are unable to
divide their resources up to meet deadlines.
Identify some symptoms of the problem
?
The biggest symptom I see, and I think needs to be addressed first, is the lack of resources on
their teams. HCG has been steadily growing and producing great products, but as deadlines
aren’t being met, they need to bring in more people to help. Bringing in more experienced people
to help on these products would take the strain and conflict away from project managers having
to give up team members. The case did not say exactly why the projects are coming in over
budget, but it could have to do with people working overtime, or being forced to perform tasks
they don’t know well. This can be changed if HCG brings in more people to help.
What is the major cause of the problem?
That the project managers are not coming to any resolutions on how to address their strategy
implementation concerns. A consultant should ask every project manager what they think should
happen and see if there are any patterns in what could work. From there, they can develop a plan
that might not make everyone happy but will be more effective and help the company achieve
their goals.
Chapter 3:
If you were Palmer at the end of the case, how would you respond?
I would agree to pull him from the project. Olds asked to be taken off and his work was slipping.
It is a big loss to the Johnsonville project, however if his work was not up to par because of his
other work, it makes more sense to bring in someone else that has the time and wants to be on an
audit project. I would agree to let him work on a different project but on the demand, we fill his
position immediately.
What, if anything, could Palmer have done to avoid losing Olds?
He should have stood stern on not allowing Olds to go to Crosby’s team in the first place. It
would have been difficult yes, but if someone new comes in, they don’t get first pick nor should
they demand someone if they are already working on a project. Palmer could have approached it
as “we can come back to this once the Johnsonville project is completed”.
What advantages and disadvantages of a matrix-type organization are apparent from this case?
The disadvantage to this matrix style was that the managers were not on the same page. Crosby
pretended to be but did not hold up his end of the deal. He wanted Olds for more time than
agreed upon and did not return the favors he owed to Palmer. It also resulted in a much heavier
workload for Olds who had to stay late to complete tasks and miss out on team bonding events
with his other team. The only advantage was that Olds was able to work on two projects instead
of bringing someone else in, but it did not work for long.
What could the management at M&M do to manage situations like this more effectively?
I think each management should have been more involved in the team picking process. It
potentially could have helped Crosby realize that Olds was already working on a project and
therefore could not be taken just because he was wanted. I also believe management should have
been more communicative with the project managers. It seems she wasn’t available for a week
when she was needed and spoke with Olds before speaking to her project managers to get the
entire situation. I believe they should have stepped in sooner to help find a solution before it
negatively affected Olds, and the projects.
