Various Assessments Why do teachers assess their students? Teachers asse their students to obtain an understanding of what our students know prior to teaching skills, to gain an understanding of what knowledge or skills they are retaining from teachings, and to understand what skil need to be taught better or if more discovery is needed. 1. Diagnostic Assessments or pre-assessments are given to students so we can gain HOW much of students know about the skill or subject prior to teaching. Most times this would be an assessment given prior to new unit of study or new lessons. 2. Informal or Formative Assessments are ther for teachers to know how much the students are retaining from the lessons being taught. This is done usually during the unit or lesson. There are various ways that this information can be obtained through assessments like whole group discussions with class, quizzes, exit tickets, writings and much more. 3. Screening Assessments are for teachers to catch and identify students who are at risk with reading, literacy skills, and comprehension. The screenings will help at- risk readers by showing warning signs to assi in knowing if intervention is needed. 4. Progress Monitoring is an assessment that is formative and monitors the progression of students throughout the year. It starts with the lowest skill not mastered and continues until mastered then moves on to the next ski This monitors student's growth throughout the year and can tell if the student is mastering previous skills and new. HOW CAN WE INTEGRATE VARIOUS ASSESSMENTS? As an educator, it is important to ensure that you are planning out your instructions to match state standards that are required in mastering. Another positive way to integrate assessments and to keep educators on task with a timeline of their teaching is by engaging in a scope and sequence. With having a scope and sequence this allows for educators to plan appropriately and according to meeting the standards/requirements. As an educator, it is important to have a planned-out timeline displaying when a skill will be taught and keeping track in a calendar. After scope and sequence and utilizing a calendar educators, can know when it is time for a culminating activity to tie up the end of a unit and run an assessment to find out what has been retained. Once this has begun new unit can be put into place to begin once other skills are mastered. IMPORTANCE OF ASSESSING AND MONITORING DATA It is crucial that educators assess students to ensure that they are the most successful in school that they can be. With educators running assessments regularly and progress monitoring, it allows teachers to understand where there are gaps in their teachings or the skills that students are working towards mastering. This allows reading specialists to know what skills need more intervention services and where to begin to gain success in mastering skills required based on age and grade. Without assessing and monitoring students, they could be at risk of needing interventions and not getting the help they need if not assessed or monitored. This would lead to struggling students falling back further and further not getting the interventions that are needed to be put in place for success. As for students who are mastering skills, collecting assessment and monitoring data allows them to be able to challenge those students in the next areas to ensure they are getting the best education. TYPES OF LITERACY ASSESSMENTS NWEA ASSESSMENT is a non-profit organization that is designed to assess student’s pre-k through 12. This assessment contributes to the mission of assisting in helping all kids learn to read. This assessment is also advancing learning outcomes for all students throughout the assessment. This assessment is reliable withing bringing actionable insights and learning solutions to assist educators master their instructional challenges. The MAP Growth assessment connects supplementary instruction to help educators with differentiation. MAP is also known for being valid and reliable with being very accurate as well (NWEA, 2023). Assessment is taken on ipad to test skills of different domains of reading. This is adaptive assessment as it adapts the questions to more challenging or easier based on if they answer correctly or not. One weakness of NWEA is if students are not used to an ipad this could be a difficult testing situation causing students to be randomly guessing at questions. Students may also get distracted clicking to hear all answers then just tap their favorite or they may get burnt out. i-Ready is a program that the district decides if they are going to use and will purchase if necessary. This allows educators to provide a diagnostic assessment three times a year that is designed for grades K- 8. This allows for teachers to keep track of student growth with an evaluation to back up data. There will be a learning path that is tailored to each student, and this also allows for room to master when ready for next level. The i-Ready assessments are premade for teachers to utilize with progress monitoring. A weakness of i-Ready could result in the students getting burnt out when testing leading to their data not being accurate. ACADIENCE is an assessment in reading that screens and progress monitors students literacy skills from kindergarten to 6 th grade (Good & Kaminski, 2018). This assessment and progress monitoring can assist educators in identifying at risk students with reading struggles. Teachers can plan their instructional support based off this data with also monitoring data progress of students every two weeks. This assessment is known for the consistency in assessments that measure something of the same skill across differences but obtaining about same scores. One weakness is that students might not perform their best on every progress monitoring test which could reflect on their data not being as accurate as it could be for each student.
