Campus Design
Women
Campus design institutions have an open prison design that allows some freedom of movement. Small housing units are scattered among the educational, vocational, recreational, and dining areas (Siegel & Bartollas, 2018). These designs can have a positive physical
impact on women inmates. Since the campus design is used for minimum-security institutions and few medium-security institutions, women inmates often have more privileges and freedom. In these institutions, women inmates can move around more freely and participate in more activities. These institutions can
have a psychological impact on women inmates. The majority of women in institutions have mental health issues. Incarcerated women face challenges such as separation from their children and family, inadequate mental health care, and insufficient substance abuse treatment during their imprisonment (Probation Info, 2021). Further, this design could affect inmate/officer relationships
. This type of style creates a distance relationship between officers and inmates since these institutions have a relatively low staff-to-
inmate ratio. As a result, inmates don't interact with officers as often as they should.

Women
Courtyard design institutions have corridors surrounding the institution. Housing, educational, vocational, recreational, prison industry, and dining areas face the courtyard (Siegel & Bartollas, 2018). These designs can have a positive physical impact on women
inmates. This design consists of small housing units with pleasant living rooms. The education, recreation, and training areas are spacious giving women inmates plenty of room to move around. These institutions can also have a psychological impact on women inmates. Although many women inmates have mental health issues, these institutions provide women with the resources they need to be successful. Further, this design could affect inmate/officer relationships
. This style creates positive interactions
between women inmates and officers. Women in this institution feel more comfortable. As a result, they perceive the relationships
