CEE 6160 Safety Engineering Fall 2023 1 Case Study 1: Construction Safety Data Requirements (Due Aug. 29, 2023) Abdilnur Tiroro Each person will review the “Safety Company Safety Data” provided on Canvas in the “Case Study 1” folder. After an initial review of the data, you will further investigate and answer the following questions. The instructor will evaluate the quality, accuracy and completeness of the responses from each person. The presented safety data is divided into three categories (spreadsheets) including Category 1: Incident Log, Category 2: Property Damage, and Category 3: Near Miss Reporting. Question 1) Classify each data category as being a “pro - active” or “reactive” data set. Incident Log Variables: Reactive Property Damage Variables: Reactive/pro-active Near Miss Reporting: Pro-active Question 2) Identify each variable that is required for each of the main categories. Incident Log Variables: Incident Number, Description, Discipline Property Damage Variables: Log number, Data Od incident, Worker name Near Miss Reporting Variables: Intervener name, Job number, Type Question 3) Identify variables that are currently not included but should be collected for each category. Incident Log Variables: Day of the week, Time of day, Material Property Damage Variables: Time of day, environment, task Near Miss Reporting Variables: Time of day, management, personnel Question 4) The categories named “Property Damage” and “Near Miss Reporting” contain text input for descriptions of the event. This type of collected data can be challenging to analyze. What strategies would you use to formulate meaningful information from these variables in both categories? I think this is a good way to find out the way to decrease the number of incidents that happen at work please. This could lead to working more carefully on the next task that is assigned.
CEE 6160 Safety Engineering Fall 2023 2 Question 5) What variables would be interesting to correlate between the three categories (for example: Variable “Discipline” from Category “Incident Log” correlated with Variable “Trade” in Category “Near Miss Reporting”. Provide three potential pairs and describe w hy these correlation investigations are interesting to your group. Correlation 1: Variable Day of the week from category property damage correlated with Near miss reporting. Explanation: This is because I think it would be good to know on what days this incident happens. This incident could be due to the motivation of the worker in that day of the week. Correlation 2: Variable “Employer” from Category “Incident Log” correlated with Variable “Trade” in Category “Near Miss Reporting. Explanation: I think there should be a correlation between this, and this incident could be happening mostly within one employer. Correlation 3: Variable “Description” from Category “ property Damage” correlated with Variable “Trade” in Category “Near Miss Reporting. Explanation: I think this should be a correlation between this because most of the incidents could be happening in the same area. If the description is found to be the same, then there should be more focus in these areas. Question 6) Describe categories of “information” you would expect to be available after the analysis of the provided dataset. I would expect that the Employer category to be available after the analysis, because if the incident is happening over and over the employer needs a lot of attention. Question 7) Describe three methods that would best communicate information generated from this dataset. The best communication ways should be safety training, in group meetings, group calls. Question 8) Summarize your general thoughts about this dataset. Provide three positive aspects of the dataset and three negative aspects of the dataset. This dataset is best to gather safety information to bring in an attention. The dataset includes a diverse range of data points. The dataset allows for the comparison of safety performance across different categories, which can help identify best practices and areas for improvement. Negative The dataset may only cover a specific aspect of safety, may not provide a comprehensive view of safety across different contexts.
CEE 6160 Safety Engineering Fall 2023 3 The dataset may not provide sufficient contextual information. Could be hard to understand sometimes.
